    Save gear for 2nd job?

    Hi all,

My fiancee and I recently started playing (last week). We are both playing archers at the moment and plan on going to Bard following that.

Should we be saving the quest gear and stuff that we get to use while leveling Bard?

    Thanks in advance!

    Firstly, welcome to the game.

It's a bit tricky... saving it can help when you circle back for crossclass skills or just want to try a new job, but it can also very quickly fill up your inventory (look into retainers if you haven't unlocked that feature already).

I would consider only saving dungeon drops for now; whites are cheap enough from vendors, especially below level 15.

When one becomes a bard, they do not stop being an archer. This means they share the same level, so gear you use while leveling archer will not be needed, only your most recent gear.

That said, you can use the old gear when leveling other disciples of war DPS classes, all of which use similar gear until level 40 or so.

THAT said, lower level gear is easily obtainable again. Most crafters can easily synthesize new high-quality gear, and you could easily obtain some on the marketboard. You can also turn gear with 100% spiritbond into materia to sell, to recoup any losses on gear.

Excellent. Thank you. Between the two of us I think we have like... 3 greens? When we decide to move to a 2nd job, is there something that speeds up gearing that job? Or should we be looking into some of the trade skill jobs to make ourselves gear?

    Thanks again.

Edit @ Urth: Ah ok that makes more sense. Thanks again. I think we will look into possible crafting. Havent seen / figured out anything with materia yet (although I have seen how gear becomes "spirit bonded" and if you try to sell it it requires an extra popup.

    Thank you as well.

Hopefully you'll get more drops. As for tradeskills... well, it is kind of cool to make your own gear, but you should be warned that it's a tier below dungeon drops. Also, the tradeskills take a bit of investment to really get rolling. If you're pretty into crafting, go for it, but if you're only so-so, I would stick to vendor gear and drops, at least for now.

Also, in line with what Urth said... there is one other thing (well, 2 things). You need Pugilist at 15 to unlock bard (which, handily, also gives you a cross class skill from them). And, you will at some point want to take Lancer to 34 as it has two very important cross class skills as well. At the low levels (pre-50), many of these jobs share gear so there is that.

If you want to hold on to your 5~15 whites, you should have plenty of space for now. It's just as you develop your characters... you might have to do some spring cleaning as stuff accumulates.

So long as you have space in your armoury chest to do so, you can save stuff to use later on other classes. (Not Bard in particular, as it will start at the point you left off as Archer, since a Bard is really just a special type of Archer, but there will be other classes like Pugilist or the early levels of Lancer which will want a lot of the same gear.) Once you start to fill up your armoury chest and need to prioritize which items to save for later classes here's some things to keep in mind:

The better dungeon drop sets (green icon background and higher item level than it's equippable level) are definitely worth holding onto until all classes that would use it have out-leveled it. (And some of them nice-looking enough to hold onto for glamour even after that.)

Pink aetherial dungeon drops and high quality crafted gear are generally equivalent to each other. If you get into crafting, you can make replacements, and if you don't, you can usually find it on the Market Board. This stuff I'd keep until it's 100% spiritbonded, then convert it to materia. Once you have another class that wants the same gear again, replace it with new HQ crafted gear.

Normal quality gear (includes quest rewards, vendor purchases, and normal quality results from crafting) is the easiest to replace. I wouldn't hold onto this when not currently using it, unless perhaps it's right on the verge of reaching 100% spiritbond. Once you outlevel it, if it's 100% spiritbonded, convert it to materia. If it's not even close, sell it to a vendor. If, however, it's almost to that 100% that would let you spiritbond it, then hold onto it for a bit and switch to it occasionally when doing simple content, so that you finish off the spiritbond. Then convert it to materia.

There's a level 19 quest in Central Thanalan called Forging the Spirit which unlocks the ability to convert used gear into materia if it's reached 100% spiritbond. If that's as much as you do, it can turn a used piece of gear that's only sellable for a few gil to vendors into a piece of materia that will fetch a few thousand on the Market Board.

Or, if you also decide to get into crafting, then there's a DoH level 19 quest at the same location called Waking the Spirit, which unlocks the ability to add that materia onto other gear in order to boost the new gear's stats. (You'll only be able to meld materia onto the types of gear you can make. For instance, you need Weaver to meld materia onto cloth gear, Leatherworker to meld materia onto leather gear, etc.)
