This is old news; IGN is almost two months behind here, with the author of that article referencing the report SE made back at the beginning of July and presenting it as new information for some reason.
We'll see SE come back with higher numbers soon, what with FFXIV having just launched in Korea, but as usual people will continue to argue that the term "registered accounts" means nothing, and continue to insist that FFXIV only has 500k actual active subscriptions, even though they've no evidence whatsoever for that statement. :P
It's important to notice that registered accounts means those who bought the game and doesn't include trial players. In comparison, WoW has over 100 million players including trials, and has maintained 5-10 million subs for years.
My guess is that FFXIV has roughly 1.5 million subs. It's because I believe the number of trial players probably far exceeds the number of registered ones, so there could be a total of 10 - 20 million created accounts. If it's the same subs/accounts ratio that WoW has, we get 0.5 - 2 million subs. On the other hand, WoW has had more time to accumulate the number of created accounts, so the ratio of subs/accounts could be much higher for FFXIV. I think 2 million subs could be possible.
So far the space for characters has been enough, because there hasn't been any known cases of accidental data rollbacks or lost character data. Housing space is sorely needed though. Instance servers were sometimes full at HW launch when a lot of people farmed dungeons, but that's back to normal now.
