Cannot find Grade 5 carbonized matter

I'm a level 60 miner and the mining log says grade 5 carbonized matter is in numerous locations but everywhere I have went I cannot seem to find it. I know it is hidden but I have mined the locations thoroughly and cannot find it. Am I doing something wrong? Where has everyone else gotten it from? Thanks.

It's just really rare. I usually see only one node with it when I'm doing favors. You can force it to pop with Luck of the Mountaineer.

It should atleast always be on the unspoiled lvl 50~ (mining, cant confirm botanist) node located in Western Coerthas Highlands. (slot will be randomized)

Found some accidentally while mining cobalt ore in N Thanalan and went to go pick up one of the unspoiled nodes when it popped.

Grade 5 carbonized matter is an EXTREMELY rarely popping hidden item. I have mined thousands of items in heavensward, and only seen it pop without luck of the mountaineer/pioneer maybe once or twice. However, you can get it much more easily with luck of the mountaineer/pioneer. Basically find a spot that can give the carbonized matter (check your gathering log to make sure if you need to) that has a node that regularly spawns with the +1 gathering attempts (it's not really necessary to find this node, but it makes it more likely to get luck of the mountaineer/pioneer to proc and possibly gives an extra gathering attempt depending on your luck for the carbonized matter) and pop the +30% gathering fortune skill on it. Eventually, you should be able to get 3 hq's in a row and use the skill to pop the carbonized matter. I typically do this while favor mining since I'm shooting for the master miner title anyway, but I don't bother and just go for crystals on my botanist when farming favors.

2. Pop the +30% gathering fortune skill on nodes (preferably the +1/2 gathering attempt nodes)

Another more reliable way to trigger Luck of the Mountaineer/Pioneer is to cycle nodes until you find one with +30% HQ, and then pop your own 30% HQ ability. That plus up to 15% HQ naturally on the node means that you'll have a 75% HQ rate. Even then your odds of actually getting three HQ in a row is not high (roughly 42%), but it's still the best way we currently have to trigger Luck of the Mountaineer/Pioneer.

While the 30% HQ gathering nodes only have four gathering attempts on them, if you have 600 or more GP you can use your gathering attempts +1 ability to stretch that node out to five gather attempts. So, pop 30% HQ node, use 30% HQ ability, mine three times, if all three are HQ, pop +1 gather attempt ability, and mine two carbonized matter.
