about steam and the standalone game

My friend have the steam version and played on it since the beginning, now he'd like to switch to a regular version of the game, we tried to conect his account in my version (standalone) and it worked fine (except the game wanted some code for heavensward since I have it installed but he doesn't own it) but still it worked: so it's safe to assume that if he gets the regular game and buy the expansion for it (all non steam) he will play with his character without any problem right?

I think, since Steam and Windows are both PC, you can play just fine...however he won't be able to transfer service accounts to a Windows/PC only (without steam).

For example I have a "steam" account but I do not play through the steam launcher (I play on the "standalone" version, aka the client from the website). I still had to purchase the HW expansion from Steam though.

Edit: So short version if he buys a new non-steam PC version of the game he will have to start his character over.

The main thing where this is an issue is buying stuff. If it's a steam account, you need to buy the steam version of the expac, etc.

All that said, you can add licenses for multiple platforms to your account. If steam is considered an entirely separate platform (in the vein of mac/ps3/ps4), then adding the keys for non-steam versions *may* work as a way to get around it.

I would suggest contacting customer service about this, but they're notoriously unreliable and famed for giving inconsistent, often incorrect answers about this sort of thing.

I've submitted something like 4 tickets, and every time, the response is "we can't deal with this so call us." Means at least 40-60 minutes on hold, THEN I got no help at all (I was trying to get registered so I COULD pay the sub price... they did suggest using gmail, but that didn't work for my 10 year old gmail account). Mostly gave up on the others (the second one had to do with getting registered in these forums, which I was unable to do because of their back-end being 100% dependant on client-side m$ os). I "solved" both issues by having my recruiter do the two simple things I needed to do to get registered.
