Retainer question

When you summon your retainers, you get a message like this:

"You are no longer selling items in the the Gridania markets."

Does that mean that while your retainer is with you, everything you have up for sale with that retainer is temporarily unavailable on the Market Board?

yes, exactly what it means...don't have your retainer occupied too long if you are trying to sell something.

A follow up question: are there really 3 separate markets or is the market board universal across all 3 capitals? Like if my retainer is selling stuff in limsa lominsa can a person in gridania see it?

You can see all 4 markets regardless of which city you are currently in. The only thing about them is you will be charged tax if you buy something that isn't sold within the current city you are in. (For example, buying Gridania Market stuffs from Limsa Lominsa)

On the same topic, is the ONLY reason you send em out on Ventures to level up so that one can get some stuff unavailable anywhere else at 50ish? Tough game there, I tried a Quick Exploration and got a ton of XP, but on the next one, less XP than the regular hunting mission.

Am I missing something as I can't seem to get an armory chest for my retainers? I was hoping to stash gear there during the leveling process...

You can see all 4 markets regardless of which city you are currently in. The only thing about them is you will be charged tax if you buy something that isn't sold within the current city you are in. (For example, buying Gridania Market stuffs from Limsa Lominsa)

Also, sometimes tax is reduced for the goods you sell in some cities.

Quick venture exp depends on the item it brings, which is completely random. If you want your retainer to level up faster the best is to use normal gathering ventures while you are online and 18 h ones when you won't be online for a while.

The retainers use your armoury chest. Be careful not to unequip too many things from them as they outgrow them without emptying your armoury chest regularly, or you'll have a hard time adding your own things in there.

I don't advise getting too many levels worth of gear in advance for them either because that just becomes a space hog. You should probably only upgrade their gear every 10-15 levels, as the next venture level range tells you you need to. If you get them a couple of items in advance, either store them in your own armoury chest or on the retainer who will be using them (it can be a pain switching and changing which retainer you're accessing mid gear up process because you put something on the wrong one).

Also note that combat retainers are the easiest to gear as they only need iLevels as opposed to actual stats and you can use a wide range of gear for them, from PVP to cross class gear you wouldn't normally wear on that class (like strength based gear is perfectly fine on a conjurer retainer so long as it's cross class), and HQ doesn't matter at all.

Gatherers on the other hand need high stats so iLvl doesn't matter and you'll likely end up needing to meld their gear which can get expensive.

Agreed. Because of the no tax for selling in Ishgard rule (yay!), I have a few of retainers selling there (yes, I rent them). It's a pain checking one for the profits you were just notified of only to realise it must be on another so have to check each one in turn. The only alternatives is restricting which things you sell on which retainers (category A items always sell on retainer A, B on B, that kind of thing) but sometimes that's difficult in itself.

I'd love it if they'd specify the retainer name in the message as well, or even instead. Honestly I don't see much need to know in which city your item sold, just who sold it.
