This.
I only discovered it recently, and it is a life saver. Greatly improves my controls without affecting my coordination.
Haha, by the way, FF14 (PS3/PS4) controller default setting is almost same as FF11 (PS2), therefore this default setting (ie. autorun/camera) is like this since year 2001.Haha, I absolutely hate the autorun! I removed it as soon as I worked out how. I'm adjusting the camera position and zoom constantly, and it would sometimes activate causing me to run into aoes or even off the edge in Titan.
But you can remove it yourself so not sure why it's an issue.
More related to the topic, 2 hotbars plus extended is perfectly useable! I don't think anything needs changing at the moment.
Actually I don't find any conflict with the camera zoom, maybe we are using different type of controllers? ^^;
To clarify extended crossbars a bit, by default it uses crossbar 8 and you access each half of it with each trigger combo (LT+RT for left half, RT+LT for right half). You need to go into Character Config > Hotbars > Sharing and untick sharing for bar 8, otherwise whatever you put there will show up for all other classes as well.
The way I use it is keep all my main rotation stuff on the main bar, put cooldowns and other less-used skills on bar 8 for use with both triggers, then I've also activated two vertical hotbars and put them next to the crossbar and copy my long cooldowns there so I can easily see when they come off cooldown without switching bars.
Ever since I started using this system, my play is much more fluid and it's easier to react to stuff.
L1 isn't a blank button, On your mob/aggro list if you have more than 1 enemy, hold L1 and use the up and down on the the d-pad to select targets from that list, its alot easier than using left and right or L1,R1.
Thank you. I came in here to say this. The OP says that the L1 button is only for autorun. However as you have mentioned, it is also used in conjunction with up and down on the d-pad to select targets from the enmity list.
It is also used with left and right to select members of the other parties in your alliance if you're in PvP or a 24-man raid. The other function it has is for swapping target filters, so it actually has several uses.

That's the way I do it :
One main hotbar (#1), one extended hotbar (#7)
One additionnal hotbar (#2) for skills that I don't have to use really quick during combat (Like Protect).
When I use the toggle button, it only switch on 1 and 2.
And for jobs that have mutually exclusive skills, I make a macro to place the right skill on the right slot.
For example, in my Defiance macro, I'll assign Inner Beast and Steel Cyclone to two slots, and on my Deliverance macro, I assign Fell Cleave and Decimation to the same slots.
Same for SCH and SMN with the pet skills on the extended hotbar.
That is fine. It could also still have autorun remappable and be an additional hotbar switch instead still.
It is pretty fluid. I would like the option I listed earlier to be able to react even faster though since my finger would never leave the analog stick. To clarify extended crossbars a bit, by default it uses crossbar 8 and you access each half of it with each trigger combo (LT+RT for left half, RT+LT for right half). It's been like that since 2001... so??Haha, by the way, FF14 (PS3/PS4) controller default setting is almost same as FF11 (PS2), therefore this default setting (ie. autorun/camera) is like this since year 2001.

If you press L1 you autorun. You also have to hold L1 to zoom. You don't think this can cause issues if you try to zoom while moving?
Maybe you just never zoom while moving. But for those of us that do, it can be quite inconvenient.
