Confused about how you get a mount

Well I joined the Gardinia grand company did a couple of the quests now the guy gives "Their Finest Hour" but it won't let me do anything when I pick it. I can't get whatever rank you need to buy a mount.

Hastily written and over-simplified, and for that I apologize, but...

You also will need to achieve recruit status in the other two nation's grand companies. That's accomplished by doing quests you obtain at the headquarters of each (don't know all the names).

Once you're there you will have to have these grand company quests complete (one in each nation)

Their Finest Hour - Gridania
An Officer and a Wise Man - Limsa
Burning Man - Ul'dah

Once those three are complete, you will be able to pick up the quest in the nation of your choice which will allow you to join that nation's grand company upon completion, granting you the title of Private Third Class.

Once you're there, you can purchase a chocobo issuance for 3000 company seals. Present that to the guy at the chocobo stables, and you'll get your chocobo.

Ok that makes sense I didn't do the other 2 nations.

I have another question since i picked Gridania as my home nation so naturally i did the Gridania company quests. But they have like no gear I can use. If I pick one of the other nations that actually have gear for my class will I be at a disadvantage or something because I didn't pick that as my starter city?

Nope. You can pick whichever GC you want.
