he started as a good guy, better than most, then the corruption of others tainted him, then he ultimately took the fall when his good guy traits came to surface.

He only turned out as violent as we know him to be, because of generalization of gridanians. Where was Fray when this poor soul needed justice? Fray is a lolicon i tell you!

If he'd non violently robbed someone should they assume he's only taking the money for Duskwright aid? Either he's an idiot that didn't realize what message he was giving out, or he didn't care about how it looked because he had another goal. To show off how strong he had become in spite of them. Spite.

Most of my posts do point out that I think the whole thing was poorly written. It was a hackneyed plot, like they threw it together because they'd already written seven other stories and just phoned the last one in. Zombies were a poor choice as well, though he did need some form of back up as a sort of final exam of your training ((I'd probably have had some dopes fall for his lines about courage and whatnot (what he presents, and then we're not killing more Duskwights fighting for a cause, if he'd swayed them with his actions supposedly on behalf of his race) and have THEM attack you instead)).

But I say him dying makes for a better story out of game because he DIDN'T deserve to die on an in game level. Again, tragedy. The alternative outcome by that point without re-writing the entire storyline ((Which, by the way, means changing characters, the Foulques we enjoy would not be the Foulques in this new story)) would be Him surviving, and either we're all happy, despite not really having fixed anything about the racism, or we reverse a centuries long history of racism and distrust in the course of a handful of cutscenes. Better people have spent more time, and died achieving less. It would seem disingenuous for us to solve RACISM with a lancefight.

His name is "Foulques" and you're wondering why he was written like a bad guy? It's like "hey, maybe Maleficent wasn't evil" or "what if Dr. Doom is really the good guy?"

But yeah, there were quite a few Disney-esque "villian falls off a cliff" moments in 2.X. Lancer, dragoon, and gladiator quests, not to mention tam-tara hard immediately come to mind, and I remember the final beast tribe quest using that trope before subverting it as a joke. It's a passive way to kill off a bad guy that doesn't involve outright murder, yet since the death isn't actually shown on screen, it paves the way for the character returning.

The lancer story's moral is that there's a certain way of learning things and you should stick to that way because it is the one true path. So naturally Foulques was gonna be the fall guy in that one.

The funny thing about Foulques is that when I first saw him in the guild challenging people, he reminded me of a dojo yaburi/dojo destroyer (a dude that shows up to challenge a dojo for the purpose of discrediting it or shutting it down by defeating its best fighters). I figured "well, this guy must be insanely good (since dojo yaburi tend to be ridiculously skilled), so I'll probably learn something awesome from him on the side or something". Then came the shows of recklessness, the fact that yes, the racism he was subject to colored his perception of people and so on.

From a character standpoint, yes, Foulques' issue was poorly-presented. Granted, to work with him in any other role outside of antagonist, the whole concept of the questline would have to change. It would have to show both ideologies (Ywain and the guild's way, and Foulques' way) on equal ground rather than one being the right way and one being the wrong way, and instead would have to focus on mending the bridge burned between Foulques and the guild. The moral thus being "there's more than one way to do things, and when used in tandem it leads to good stuff" or something along those lines.

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
