Initially, I don't like this "topic" at all. I have no <3 to the person who "oh, dear, it would seem you have enraged the beast." Then he left me alone fighting. This person says he's fearless, but inside he is a coward. During the battle you knows it, master saw it, and in the final cs you saw it.

pointed his weapons and hurt/kill many lancers is also wrong. No matter how you got insulted in school or life, you bring the gun and shoot everyone is wrong. That action for the final outcome doesn't matter what was before. no matter how wrong the other ppl did before didn't make the person's misbehavior right. There are tons npc in HW have bad youth/ discriminated life, but they work their way up.

Later... Ya indeed the lore masters indeed hate Foulques. They created everything includes Foulques. maybe we should just say initially just a bunch 0s and 1s. then they decided to name this 0s and 1s Foulques. There got to be a common enemy pointed to or we will just end up like 1.0 story that we babysit bunch kids and happily after that... So they put this 0s and 1s, happened to be Foulques, as the bad guy. So, ya lore masters hate Foulques.

As history stuffs, there is no right or wrong. Just which side of story you want to believe more.
People already took their sides, so why ask the form then debate, especially toward the friction char. Writers can bring out other 5+ points why Foulques is a bad person in seconds. and they hate this bunch of 1s and 0s, or say the thing named Foulques.

    (curse mobile\\\\'s inability to edit!)

Both Duskwrights and Moon Keepers have a decently sized group of violent poachers running around and literally spitting on the ideals that the Elementals put forth and Gridanians work their whole lives to maintain. But, we frequently bump into NPCs of both clans having ordinary lives, working along side Hyuran and Wildwood people.

The fact that non-Grid people seem flippant over the laws of the Elementals put forth that they take so much care to follow is the source of the distrust of outsiders.

Foulques states the fact that he was a Duskwright was part of the shaming he received when he confessed to the crime he commited, and that his accomplices used his race against him to get away scot free.

But he says this to make the player sympathize with him despite, well, being an asshole by putting you and fellow lancer novices in way too dangerous situations and defaming the guild that he robbed at every opportunity.

The deal with Duskwrights IS sad, but Foulques is a bad example as he uses his race and past to excuse his bad acts today.

As for Ala Mhigo, you forget that they were really terrible neighbors to Grid and the Twelveswood, and have as much a history of bad blood together as Mhigo does with Ul\\\\\\\\'dah.

I can agree with this to some extent, although by the end of the questline he's done enough to warrant being looked down upon.

I'm pretty sure they're saving the whole Gridanian racism issue for 4.0. The Shroud does border to Ala Mhigo, which I'm fairly certain is going to be where we go for the next expansion. It'll also give us another bash at the still fairly unresolved racism/class issues in Ul'Dah and Little Ala Mhigo.

A part of me wished I could save Foulques, but two wrongs dont make a right. Foulgues was wronged, but inturn he attacked innocent members of the lancer guild. Lets not forget that he rigged WoL test alot of times and endangered the WoL. For us players this was a easy quest, but lorewise the WoL was a newbie adventurer who started as a newbie Lancer. Even if the WoL has more skill, Foulques should have known better. Foulques has every right to be angry, but inflicting pain on those that did nothing wrong to him, does not justify his actions.

About the racism, I agree that Gridanians are bad, but the Elezen innkeeper at Gridania did say during her moogle quest, that while Gridania does have deep racial bias towards certain races, they have improved their way of thinking.

Side note: I leveled my Lancer to 30 right before leveling Summoner up to where you meet IT'S rival, saw a white haired pretty boy and thought "Oh damn, I'm going to have to kill another one, aren't I."

But on topic, Foulques was wrong. I feel sympathy for the character Which as Belhi points out means that they wrote him in a sympathetic way, but I don't agree with him. He's a reckless and dangerous person that was going to get himself killed even without our intervention. All us showing up in the story changed is that He didn't take a bunch of others with him. I DO wish he'd show up again ((He fell off a cliff in a high fantasy setting. Short of a body I'm only writing him off because the story seems to have forgotten about him (The real tragedy here, though not unexpected.)))

He actually makes a good lead into the Dark Knight Path. While he didn't have any actual Dark based powers, he let his suffering and hatred eat at him and turn him into something that wasn't that honest young man who tried to make up for a moments mistake.

Back to being tangental, I didn't particularly like Ywain. Opposite from Ywain, amusingly. I respect him, but I don't like him. Calling me out on "being frozen with fear" when foulques lunged at me, and telling me that a spear isn't a defensive weapon ((He fights boars. Someone should really tell him that you use spears on them so they don't just go through your weapon and pulp your innards.))

This isn't so much a discussion about the Lancers being racist and that being an issue as it is about them (or their previous incarnation anyway) being racist and the game doesn't address it. It brushes against the topic but never quite goes there.

When I first started playing FFXIV, I had a friend who had been playing FFXIV for a while and she warned me that when levelling up my class, I'd have to do quests to acquire new skills and to advance in general.

Well, I can say I certainly did not expect the lancer quest to be so involved (story-wise) and that I, too, like some of you in this thread, would feel sympathetic towards Foulques who was supposed to be the "bad guy". I was so sympathetic towards him and felt so bad for him that after I had complete the final lancer quest and Foulques ended up dead, I rambled for ages to my friend about how unfair it was, that I didn't want him to die and that I hoped my dragoon job quests wouldn't be this depressing.... Fast forward several character levels and you fight bloody Estinien.. and I groaned and rolled my eyes and thought "Here we go again.. another character I'm interested in is about to die...".

Thankfully, Estinien doesn't die as we all know XD But you know? After the lancer quests, I just go into class and job quests now expecting someone to die at some given point and try not to get too attached to characters >_>

td;lr - yes I felt sorry for Foulques and felt that his story could have been written better. Poor guy deserved a second chance in my opinion.

Yeah I'm quite flummoxed by the complete lack of reaction to my characters Duskwightness everywhere I go. Most of the time I forget that Duskwights are supposed to be discriminated against, in Gridania at least.

In to he case of this story, I was disappointed more than anything else, really. Foulques was by far the most interesting character there. Especially being a fellow Duskwight I was really feeling sympathetic towards him and it seemed like he was working towards some sort of redemption in the end. But just when it seemed we were actually getting through to him he accidentally stepped off a cliff. And even then I thought maybe we'll get to him in time and be the hero and save him despite everything he's done to us and get through to him that way but no. He just died. I mean, I get not being able to save everyone but this was just... after all that, a random accidental death? Too anticlimactic.

By the way, that must be a sight, having Gale up against Foulques.

Enough of a sight that I think Foulques thought Gale was mocking him.

The fact that my character ended up looking so much like Foulques is probably part of why I had a knee jerk reaction to the Lancers. But when I think about it my real issue is Foulques is interesting and the Lancers aren't. The Archery quests have similar themes of bigotry and racism but the characters are all pretty well explored. Foulques is the only fleshed out character in the Lancers Guild and we spend more time with him than Ywain. We know him, we know his suffering and his motives, but we don't know anything about the group that we're supposed to be allied to other than they stab things with spears.

All of that said, as a Duskwight fan I am always eager to see how people feel about Duskwights in the game world. There are very few Duskwights... I think Foulques of the Mists and Jandelaine the Aesthetician are the only named Duskwights I've come across, at least that I can remember. Lancers could have been a good place to explore the racial divide between Wildwoods of Gridania and the Duskwight but it wasn't.

Maybe someday we'll learn more about that.
