Thanks, just found the types of matter list on the patch notes again, so have a better picture of what to aim for.

Punctuation is your friend. It deliniates the difference between "Let's eat, Grandma!" and "Let's eat Grandma!"

From my experience the catalyst mini-game for miner(probably BOT/FSH too) works like this:

    Fingertips of the gods procs

On next gather, if a catalyst is available at your current node the +-5 slider will pulse with a pink/purple outline.

Pick a spot on the slider.
If the slider stops pulsing there is no catalyst at that setting.
If the slider keeps pulsing there is a catalyst at that setting.

When you move into the actual gathering phase the entire meter will be pulsing with the same outline if a catalyst is present.

Successfully gather while the meter is pulsing and you will obtain the catalyst.

Out of around 20 nodes at Nophica's Wells (70/30 MIN/BOT) I only had the ability proc once for me.

I have a tinfoil hat theory on the whole materia system. The system itself sounds like something I'd see in a F2P game. Before you go apeshit, I don't want this game to go F2P. I'm not even suggesting that it will, but the materia system is the perfect type of system for cash shop games. They could put a lot of it in a cash shop i.e. catalysts, scrolls to increase the rate of spiritbind, items of varying cost to increase the success rate of socketing more than one matiera, etc.

Not to discount your theory, but there's already an item in-game that increases spiritbond rate, Patriot's XXXX (forget full name), obtainable from GCs. It would seem likely more items such as this will continue to make their way into our grubby paws, although I don't see XIV going F2P (even though you said you weren't saying it would). They'd shut down the servers before that happened, as the population's still not high enough to really warrant even a F2P business model long-term.

If only you could collect several of them, but then I guess we'd look something like this:
