NEW! Whoa, I'm very new here!

I've just been graced with the amazing presence of ffxiv! This is my first final fantasy, er, encounter. Although I am new to FF, I'm not new to the MMO world! In the past I have played WoW and DDO for awhile. I have however taken brief breaks, but decided to give this hyped game a try and thus far I'm overjoyed with the overall feel of the game. I can tell I'm going to have a great time playing!!

I'm in the world Exodus. My lovely Elezen: Phyrra Naelgrath! Seeing as I'm enjoying this game so much, I have found myself a little discouraged by confusion and I suppose my overall stupidity.. haha. I've been playing for two days now but I'm having a hard time getting the gist of things, and I'm a tad overwhelmed. I'm a bit slow and I'd appreciate any helpful words.. Any advice, guidance, guild-joining, or friendship would just be great! I know that having friends in-game can make the experience plenty better. Hope to share this experience with some of you!!^^

Welcome to XIV. Forum tip before the below: Editing your post gets rid of the 1000 word limit.
if you ever find yourself on Leviathan Server, look me up or my FC Covenant of the Phoenix.
for your character, you started in Limsa. Until you've completed the leve 15 Main Story Quest, you'll solely be questing there. City quests should get you to about level 4 or 5. At every five levels there is a class or job (comes later) quest. After completing your level 10 class quest, you can go to every other Class guild (including crafting/gathering) and start those. You can have every Job to cap on the same character. When leveling a different Battle class it will get a bonus to xp until it catches your highest leveled class; this is important because you only have quests that you didn't already do; so you level by doing FATEs and dungeons as well as doing any roulette via the Duty Finder as able.
If you stay as a marauder at 30 you can unlock its Job, Warrior, by completing a quest that requires you to have leveled gladiator to 15 (though you'll want it at least to 22 sooner then later for provoke) and have completed the Sylph Management quest in the Main Storyline Quests. Classes can use some skills from other classes gaining one every 5 levels. When you are a Job, ie Warrior: you can only use skills from Gladiator and Puglist and you only have one per 10 levels upto 5.
Most dungeons are through the Main Storyline, though there are a few that come from other areas.
You'll likely get to do many fates while questing so you'll get the feel of them before alternate class burns.
Guildheists have a first time completion bonus, for every class.
if you have no quests in an area, double check your Main Story Quests as they lead you into level appropriate quests comparable to the MSQ.
Search for a Free Company, specially one willing for new players as they're more likely to help if you get stuck on any party content.
XIVDB is a good database for quick help on items, what Job has what Cross Skills and what level they are, its a great resorce to keep around for swift assistance.
To get to the 3.0 Heavensward content, you have to complete the entirety of the 2.0-2.55 storylines. the 2.1-2.55 are all level 50 content.
Always try to upgrade your gear so it stays within 5 levels of your current level. Weapon most importantly. Accessories are a little less 5 level incremental. Purple are Relic (best weapons and upgradable throughout an expansion), Blue is Artifact (Job/class specific High End Gear) Greens are better then the pinkish most of the time, HQ better then NQ: Crafted Green's can be HQ at 50 and 60.

    I'm pretty new myself, so....

You'll get lost. It's okay. There's nothing aggressive in the cities, and aside from the occasional level 50 enemy that pops up (rarely, just keep an eye out), nothing's going to attack you first until you get to the level 10 zones or thereabouts. Wander. Explore. Just soak it in. And remember to breathe.

Tag all the aetherite crystals, as you can get around the city quickly and for free that way. Tag the ones you find in small hamlets, too, but teleporting out of town is PRICEY, so use sparingly. You can always hit your return to go back to where you set home (probably the main plaza in Limsa). If you can't see the return button, go to the first button on the bottom right of your screen if you're playing on a PC, press it, and choose Actions and Traits. It will pop up a menu showing various useful things like Return that you can drag to the hotbar.

Gear goes into your armoury, so look there if you've got any quest rewards you want to equip. You'll get lots of gear from quests. If you need anything to round it out, there are merchant NPCs in the cities and in many small towns.

You'll get shards a lot as part of quest rewards. Save em! If you start crafting you'll need them. They go into a special panel in the inventory, so don't take up extra space.

Follow the main story quests, the ones with the flamey icons, and do some side quests, as it's your first time out, and you need the gear and the cash. Also, go back to your profession guild every five levels for a new class quest.

At level 10 when you've finished up the main story that far, and done your class quest, a bunch of things will open up. You can use the chocobo porters to get around then, you'll get a hotel room (very cool), and you'll be able to learn crafting, gathering, and other battle classes if you like, but you don't need to rush it.

Guildhests will open up, too, they're mini-dungeons, and take about three minutes at level ten, it's learning to play in parties. And levequests, which are repeatable quests from the city, and in certain hamlets.

You probably have a hunting log, at least if you've finished your level 1 class quest. You get a lot of experience from killing the enemies listed in it, and you'll find most of them as you work through your quests.

The world gets bigger again at level 15 when the main story unlocks airship travel, so you'll be visiting Uldah and Gridania. And there'll be a challenge log, and dungeons open up, and you rescue the aesthetician from certain doom (he's dramatic!) and he's your friend for life. You can learn to dance, and you'll find your way to the casino, the Gold Saucer, featuring entertainments like Triple Triad and chocobo racing!

Mostly, have fun, that's what the game is for. There's a lot of information online, so if you get completely stuck on something, it's pretty easy to look up.

Enjoy your stay in Eorzea, and if you have any specific questions, just holler!

There are 2 or 3 threads that's sole purpose is to link new codes so that new players can get the bonus' even if they have no one playing they know IRL, so its not surprising.

To OP: You can buy stuff off the Market Board (Auction house equiv) but until you have Retainers you can't sell there. They are unlocked around level 20 Main Story Quest. Which is when you also get to join a Grand Company. These are "faction" for Company Seal Gear (which you get off fates after joining) you get your Chocobo (mount) after completing a quest for your GC which unlocks any other mounts as well (if you got collecters' ones)

All the more reason to keep them there and not spam unrelated threads from new players asking for advice.

Retainers are actually from a level 17 quest, (though with how fast leveling is in the early levels, it's fairly common to be a bit over-leveled by the time you get to it). Joining a Grand Company is a little later, in one of three possible level 20 quests.

lol fair enough. I just know for all three of my characters I've hit both at about 20; so thats what I tell people.

as to the codes, some new players don't know about it so it will likely stay as lets put them into the new player's post kinda thing. >.>
