    Hello

Hello everyone, i'm new to this game, I've played the Final fantasy RPG series starting back on the PsOne with FF7 (which happens to be my favourite) through 8 and 9, and 10 on Ps2, and 13 on the xbox 360.. I've never played the FF series as an MMO, I've went with the human breed hyur? and pugilist on the Ragnorok Server UK, while I've played a couple of mmo's including WoW, Anarchy Online, Age of Conan and some others, this is a nice looking game, but as a trial free for 14 days I didn't expect much to be given away.. I do however find that you cannot chat on the local server disappointing, it's a great way of learning the game from veteran players.. to help people new like myself, however I understand the no mail/trading in game and the level cap, it's similar to other games..
I understand there's been an expansion called heavens sword to, any tips or info would be welcome, I also see people giving away game codes, what are they all about, thanks!

The game codes are for the recruitment campaign. You get free stuff and so does the person that give you the code, nothing really crazy just some extra goodies.

The expansion is something you wont need for a little bit of time, you have to complete the storyline up to version 3.5 to even enter any of the expansions content, so if your not sure about the game there really isnt a huge reason to have it til your are well into the level 50 content. Other than that it plays similarly to most theme park style MMO's ( WoW being the closest cousin) although FFXIV uses a slower GCD but more combo centric skill strings. Pugilist ( or monk) is really about stringing combos and being aware of the bonus in your skills that comes from proper placement in relation to the mob.

As a new player though just make sure your always up to date on the MSQ ( main storyline quests) as they are the primary gate for almost all the content in the game. Don't worry the story is actually very good once you get past some of the standard fetch quests.

    Good luck though!

Thank you for a speedy reply, i'll hang back on the expansion like you say till I see how I get on with the original game, how many levels is there to get in this game, standalone and expansion?.. I guess the new expansion was for end game players and content and didn't add anything for the lower level players such as areas, quests or items?.. however I do see a similarity to WoW, I've been raising strength from my bonus abilities to.

The biggest problem is.. is that I can't chat on global channels to get help and advice

The pre-expansion game is capped at level 50 while the expansion raises it to level 60. The expansion is solely for gameplay beyond level 50 and also requires you to have completed the Main Story Quests from the original game and all patches up until expansion. The Main Story Quest is also in a way a tutorial to the more advanced aspects of the game so doing that while learning the about the Duty Finder and such helps! Also don't be afraid of testing new classes and get used to cross-classing!

The problems with communicating for trialing seems pretty harsh. I had friends testing the game that got tired of not being able to talk to each other. I'm not sure how to solve this, maybe if there is a linkshell for new people on your server... I don't know. although if you have any specific questions, fire away here and I can see if I can answer anything.

The original version covers up to level 50, while the expansion raises the level cap to 60 and adds 3 new jobs only available by having at least one level 50 of the prior jobs/classes.
Not being able to chat in global channels is an RMT (real money trading) countermeasure, I am unsure atm when or how this restriction lifts, probably by completing the trial and suscribing to the game. You may want to look out for shouts in your area for FC (free company aka guild) recruitments, to meet more players and make friends.
About the armoury system: you start the game with one class and once you reach level 10 (and always completing your class quests which are every 5 levels), you have the option to visit other guilds in the city and unlock more classes. At level 30 your class will turn into a job with extra skills and attributes, you will see the requirement to unlock that job by talking to the corresponding class NPC.

Thank you guys, also I have noticed that there is sockets/slots on my armour, i'm guessing this is to add materia to it? how do I obtain these, are they dropped/bought or crafted with a job? i'm unsure of what class to learn along side my pugilist, I wouldn't mind some healing or magic abilities that give me defences while in combat, it sounds like I can do this since i'm level 10+ :d

The materia quests come with crafting, however, there is little point in doing it at lower levels. Dungeons drop gear that is generally as good as you can materia and you will go through gear so fast that its hardly worth sinking the money into it. Melded gear is very good at cap levels depending on the job, but at low levels its lack luster. Materia itself comes from spiritbinding 100% to gear then converting it into materia. There is a quest in central thanalan in the north east corner where there are some goblins. Pugilist actually gets second wind and featherfoot which are both very good defensive skills, but subbing something like cure as a cross class is usually not worth it since you won't have a high enough mind to make the heal big enough.

Ok I guess cure is out of the window , I have both featherfoot and second wind, they are great and have saved my bacon a few times already , I see that the armour I have worn and leveled with has a spirit bond of 100%, i'm guessing with the quest above you've described the materia will come from that and the spirit bond of items which has 100%

Hello and welcome! My advice is when you see those recruitment codes spams, don't just take it. Take the one that is the same as your server and check the player who's giving the code out, is he/she genuinely wants to help you out in the game or not. I'm sorry but I have to say this, don't get fooled...
