Retainers are actually from a level 17 quest, (though with how fast leveling is in the early levels, it's fairly common to be a bit over-leveled by the time you get to it). Joining a Grand Company is a little later, in one of three possible level 20 quests.
lol fair enough. I just know for all three of my characters I've hit both at about 20; so thats what I tell people.

as to the codes, some new players don't know about it so it will likely stay as lets put them into the new player's post kinda thing. >.>
