Simply using the large font size doesn't fix either of the issues. The large setting is still far too clunky and requires too much real estate on the map. It's also doesn't fix the lack of bolding, which makes it difficult for people with certain vision impairments to read.
Along with bolding, making the dark outline/shadow around the letters a bit more pronounced could help. Mostly white text on pale green, yellow, and cream background isn't a lot of contrast.
