So I'm in the market to upgrade my monitor (60hz 1080p) to ASUS' new PG278Q (144hz,G-sync,1440p). I'm curious what people who have G-sync monitors think of the game running on it (I also use windowed fullscreen mode).

I'd be curious if anyone has any experience as well now that it is supported in Windowed mode as apparently some applications perform very poorly with windowed mode G-sync enabled.
I cannot talk from experience on G-sync, but I think they added support for windowed mode just a while back. I have no idea how it performs that way though. Eitherway regarding 120Hz/144Hz I have noticed that some games look a bit stuttering in windowed, sometimes noticeable and sometimes not, but for me FFXIV is one of them.
I use the same monitor. G-sync runs both on windowed and full screen options with the newer Nvidia drivers so there is no problem if you play on a windowed mode. You need to select this option in the Nvidia driver control panel though cause it's not enabled by default. Other than this it runs perfectly. Go on and make your purchase it feels so great you will not want to return to any other monitor.
Love my ASUS Swift. G-sync is wonderful, and works well. Definitely worth the price.
