Security Token: How to switch from the physical dongle to the phone version

I have been using a security token since its introduction way, way back in FFXI. Now I know that the tiny battery should be good for quite some time and the one time codes are so numerous that I shouldn't ever run out.

It's a great way to control the login security of your account, however, it is a bit inconvenient to have to carry the physical device around with me all the time. On several occasions I have managed to forget it at home when going to game at a friend's house etc.

I would like to switch to the phone software version, which is very convenient, but I am not sure how this would be done. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

You have to contact SE support for them to remove the physical token.

You can do it yourself, you do not need to contact SE support. Here is how:

Log on to Mogstation or go straight to SE account management (not XIV account management.)
If you went to Mogstation, click on [Square Enix Account Settings] then > [Account Information]
Next you want to scroll down and find the [Services and Options] and click on [One-Time Password]
Since you have a physical token, click on [Security Token (key ring type)]
Then next you'll click on [Security Token Removal] then click next and follow the rest of the instructions, after that you'll need to download the phone app and follow it's instructions or the ones on the account page on how to register that one. Hope this helps!

Remember to keep the "emergency removal" code in a safe and accessible place, should your device get stolen or if you do a factory reset... you'll be locked out of your account and you would have to contact SE via their support systems (form/phone)

Yep. Synced that information to Drop Box via 1Password. Nice and secure. The software token will be much more convenient than the keychain. I rarely forget my phone.

Sounds stupid, but there was a little pang when I deleted the keychain token from my account. Like I mentioned, I've been using it since the original introduction in FFXI. To be honest, it was like cutting the last tie to a game I played for close to a decade.

I was using the phone token until I got fed up with it asking every single time. IIRC I still have an unanswered request from early last year somewhere in the feedback forums requesting a 'remember this device' option so that I won't have to put in my one-time password every single time I want to login.
