Can I dye my gear? And is there a costume system?

    Hi guys

I started with final fantasy a week ago. I have not played any other final fantasy games before. I started final fantasy because I was a bit tired of wow.

    So..to my questions.

    Can gear be dyed?

Is there a costume or transmog (the wow thing) system that let me display the gear pieces I like the looks of? on top of the gear with the best stats....

Yes for both of your questions.

Some gear cannot be dyed though, but most can.

You can, in Vesper Bay there is a quest (level 15) that you can do to start dyeing your gear.

Also there is a system called "glamouring" in which you can have a piece of gear take on other gear's looks. The restrictions are you must be able to wear the piece of gear (this includes class and level restrictions, so you can't glamour a piece of gear onto a lower level piece of gear to look like a high-level player... you can do the opposite though). That quest, however, isn't available till you hit level 50.

Edit: You can tell a piece of gear is dyeable if there is a small circle in the item image's upper right corner.

You'll pretty much have to go to Vesper Bay around that level (maybe a bit after...depends on how far in the story you're getting hehe).
And yeah... some people say that have fun!

Clearly, the best Final Fantasy character is Locke Cole.

Unless the quest for the dye has changed, you might need Orange Juice (or something similar), which can easily be bough in the Coffer & Coffins (or such similar name) just southeast of Camp Blackbrush in Thanalan.

Did the quest a few years ago, so don't know if they changed it any. Even if they have, always good to have something to cool you off under that blazing Thanalan sun

The dye quest is called Color Your World, and you get it from Swyrgim in the Vesper Bay area of Western Thanalan. Makes it worth heading there as soon as the main scenario sends you to Ul'dah.

The Merchant & Mender right there in Vesper Bay has now taken to stocking orange juice as well, so you can pick some up locally near where you get the quest.

If you're looking for dyes, by the way, there is a merchant in each major city's vendor area that sells some dyes. Some of them have unintuitive titles though, so their names are: Alaric (Old Gridania, (14,8)), Unsynrael (Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks (6,12)), and Nanabe (Ul'dah - Steps of Thal (14,11)). There is also a merchant that can be placed in an FC house who also sells dyes - the Junkmonger. If your FC has a house, they sell the same dyes as the city vendors mentioned above. Some dyes can only be crafted, but take very little to craft. People sometimes put them on the MB (Market Board) at crazily marked up prices, so if the dye you want is not available for a reasonable price, you should ask your FC if anyone can make it for you. Other dyes are only obtainable from Beast Tribe faction vendors, which you can only get access to by being level 41+ and gaining enough faction with the appropriate tribe. Again, that's something a friend/FC-mate can easily help you with if the MB has only overpriced ones.

The special dye category (the last one with the rainbow symbol) contains dyes that are untradeable: Pure White, Jet Black, Metallic Silver, Metallic Gold, and the Pastels. You can only get them by sending a well-geared level 50+ retainer on quick ventures - not something you'll be able to do for a while. But, if you really want something dyed those colors, if the item itself is tradeable, you could trade the item to a friend/FC-mate, have them dye it with their dye, and then trade it back.

The Metallic Red, Metallic Blue, and Metallic Green dyes, by the way, are cash-shop only ($1 per pot).

Terebinth lets you remove a dye to restore something's default color. You can get them from any of the dye sellers mentioned above for 60 gil.

There are 96 dyes in this game (plus Terebinth). 11 of them are the special, untradeable ones (8 obtainable from retainer ventures, 3 from the Cash Shop). 32 (plus Terebinth) can be bought from city/house merchants. 20 can only be crafted. 28 can only be bought from Beast Tribe faction vendors (weirdly, 'Sylph Green' is only sold by the Kobolds xD). 5 can either be crafted or bought from the Ixali Beast Tribe faction vendor.

Dying your Company Chocobo's feathers, by the way, is a completely separate system. Even though the chocobo feather colors share names with the dyes, you don't use dyes to color them. To dye your chocobo, you have to first stable your chocobo, which requires your FC to have a house and stables. Then, while in the stables, you can feed your chocobo special fruit. There are guides on this online if you want to do it, and your FC has a house.

For the Glamour system, once you've unlocked it by doing the level 50 quest "A Self-improving Man" in Mor Dhona, in order to actually use it, you will need to get Glamour prisms of the proper grade and type. The item that determines what you need is the item whose appearance you want to use, NOT the item whose appearance you want to change. You can tell what type by looking at the item whose appearance you want to use's repair class. For instance, if it says it requires a Weaver to repair it, then you need a Clothcraft prism to glamour it. Carpenter means you need a Woodworking prism, and so on. You can tell the prism grade you'll need by looking at the item's item level. If the item level is between 1 and 40, you need a Grade 1 prism. 41-80 is Grade 2, 81-120 is Grade 3, 121-160 is Grade 4, and 161+ is Grade 5. These can often be extremely overpriced on the MB, especially the Grade 1 ones, but they're actually pretty cheap to make. So, yet again, you should ask friends/FC-mates if they can make some for you if you provide the materials. The Clear Prisms which are always required to craft the Glamour Prisms are bought either from the MB, or for 200 gil from the merchant in every city who sells the starter gear and gysahl greens (like, Bango Zango in Limsa or Maisenta in Gridania)

To hide any gear slot (except weapon/offhand) you want, you can buy invisible items for (almost) every gear slot from the merchant you unlock from completing "A Self-improving Man." They're all called "The Emperor's New ____" and when you glamour them onto something, it completely hides that gear slot. This is great if, like me, you hate (non-earring) jewelry in general and always want to hide your rings/bracelets/necklaces! It's also a way to hide headgear on retainers, who do not get the "hide headgear" option.

Such kind Merchants, saving people the trouble of running around like headless chocobos in their quest for a fresh glass of Orange Juice.
