    Will Directx12 ever be supported?

    I was busy doing some research if FFXIV game developers will implement directx12 in the future. Sadly I couldn't find much info.

    The only thing I found was that heavensward release wouldn't contain directx12. I hope in the future this will actually be implemented, because on some low/medium end systems FFXIV runs really bad, even with everything on low.

    Doubt anyone know the answer, so just sharing my opinion with it

    Considering they JUST added DX11, it'll probably be some time before they add DX12 support. There aren't many more features we could get with DX12 without them rewriting the game engine from scratch.

    That said, SE has been experimenting with DX12 and probably plans to make use of it in the future - if nothing else because it finally allows them to render FMV in real time. (The box doing so required a whole pile of Nvidia Titan cards, though.)

    DX12 isn't even out yet to my knowledge.

    Can't program using an API that hasn't even been finalized.


    Turned out it just came out with the launch of Windows 10.

    Personally I recommend not expecting too much from DX12, it's pretty much MS's version of Mantle. It will help reduce CPU usage but otherwise I have not seen anything groundbreaking from the likes of Mantle.

    The main feature of DX12 is the performance especially in terms of drawcalls, which I think would really benefit an MMO. It has also been shown that porting dx11 engine to dx12 is fairly easy task.
    However for some reason SE gives the impression that priorizing content means that engine programmers are somehow 100% involved in that. I mean sure I would want content first and extra graphics stuff later but why couldn't we have both? (Seriously SE give me that damn AA)

    ffxiv doesn't technically support windows 10 yet, but they are working on it, so i would guess it would support dx12 somewhere down the line

    I'm pretty sure things like this aren't added in regular patches, but I do think they might go with DX12 for 4.0 which should be out at the end of 2016/early 2017. It's just too early to say though.

    I have to point out though, the game running slowly on some systems has more to do with engine design than rendering API, even if both DX11 and DX12 help a bit to increase performance. Even on my system (overclocked i7 and two R9 290s in Crossfire) I still don't get more than 40 FPS in busy areas or if there's lots going on.
