Not really going to argue about this, but in no way has the word ever been used as a positive one. n00b, newb etc are just variants of the same thing, because the internet loves shortening everything. If you're trying to tell me that "newbie" doesn't sound worse than "new player" you're only lying to yourself.

No, actually, miles is correct. "Newb" and "Newbies" are nowhere near negative, it's up to you how you want to see it, but that's the same as anyone who would just suddenly think random words are offensive. "Noob" is the derogatory word.
