Not really going to argue about this, but in no way has the word ever been used as a positive one. n00b, newb etc are just variants of the same thing, because the internet loves shortening everything. If you're trying to tell me that "newbie" doesn't sound worse than "new player" you're only lying to yourself.
I guess calling them 'new players' who are actually new is an insult?

II. Defining 'Noob'
Contrary to the belief of many, a noob/n00b and a newbie/newb are not the same thing. Newbs are those who are new to some task* and are very beginner at it, possibly a little overconfident about it, but they are willing to learn and fix their errors to move out of that stage. n00bs, on the other hand, know little and have no will to learn any more.
