FFXIV 2nd expansion: Viera-like race still a possibility?

Considering how low the Roegadyn, Elezen and Lalafell populations are, this statement rings very true.

Wasn't it mentioned by SE as well that the Mi'qote female is the base model for all the races when it comes to designing gear, like its made for them first then its adjusted for everyone else.

Well that would explain why a lot of hairstyles seem to favor females.

I don't know about the population in the entire game but what I see at least in Cerberus is that the lalafell and Au Ra(male too which doesn't follow the Hyur body type) populations are definetely on par with the others.
And although I'd probably just continue playing a miqo'te I'd be all for exotic races! However it's unlikely for one more reason. Ease of devs. The more the new body types deviate from the already established ones, the more work it'd be to adjust new gear to them.

During ARR the rank of most played race in FFXIV was:

NA/EU
1. Miqote
2. Hyur
3. Lalafell

JP
1. Lalafell
2. Miqote
3. Hyur

Since Au Ra females look very alike to the miqotes and hyur, I am going to guess that they are either in the top 3 of most played races or the number 4. Census, polls and avatars on forum and ingame have shown me that female Au Ra is either in the top 3 or number 4 of most played female races. It would not suprise me if the NA/EU rank is right now:

1. Miqote
2. Hyur
3. Au Ra

I think Japan still favours the Lalafell the most, at most they are tied with Miqote.

I'm more interested how the ears will be. Since they're on top of the head like Miqo'te will ear change depending on the hairstyles or will we be able to change the size/ shape ala Elezens and Lalafells .... or like the au ra where its limited to the face :-/

That is what I thought aswell, but someone made a very valid point that alot of hyurs are male hyurs bots.

That census is from the lodestone and measures every character ever created including dead and buried accounts, bots and inactive alts. It is not an accurate representation of the races of active players (as you can probably guess by the portion of Au Ra in the image). There is a better census made by players, which filters the lodestone data based on the character's progress in the MSQ and the changes in stats over time. This is from 7 months ago:
