As a tank it's your responsibility to assess what the party is capable of and pull accordingly. If you see your healer twiddling thumbs or throwing stones while you HP sits at 80-100%? You know you can pull more than one trashpack.

That being said, if you see that DPS is utter crap and the healer is struggling, you should slow down too.

As for explaining the tactics: explaining is fine and all, but please for the love of god don't yap on and on trying to explain everything in minute detail.
Look at the role of the newcomer, throw him the 2 sentences it takes to explain the deadly mechanics and pull.

No one wants to spend the night in the dungeon. Getting everyone through there as smoothly and quickly as possible is a burden we chose when we went in as tank.

Oh and btw: if you see that the tank misjudged the group, there is such a thing as a chat. You can ASK whether he can pull more aggressively or relax. Don't just charge in and "pull moar".

@Valenth: I too tank according to "you pull it? you tank it." You made the right call.

Everyone knows what their strength and weakness are.
    Sadly, most people don't.
Really, because many (esp in a videogame) cannot accept that they might be wrong.
