To be honest if you didn't enjoy the main story enough to play it until Heavensward, you didn't miss out on anything and Heavensward might not be for you. Heavensward content follows literally the same pattern with dungeons and primals as 2.0 did (as of now, at least)

I wish more people voted with their wallets like this. I do like the story, but I agree 100% that it needs to stop with the useless fetch quests. I think 5 MSQ would be quite sufficient instead of 50+ the we have to do. Of course that would mean those 5 quests would need to be a tad longer, but a LOT more meaningful. We all know when new MSQ content is released, most people clear it in two or three days max. Having less MS quests but more quality would only make everyone's life better.

You did the right thing, OP if there was nothing keeping you there.

In the well promoted QnA in March with the SE producer he said right off:

In order to visit Ishgard, you’ll first have to complete the main scenario quest “Before the Dawn,” which will be implemented in Patch 2.55 at the end of this month. For those of you thinking about returning at the start of Heavensward, we recommend coming back a bit earlier to finish off the main scenario quests. With the main scenario completed, you can install Heavensward and immediately accept the first quest of the expansion that will lead you to Ishgard.
The warnings were plastered all over the web for months before release.

Also it does not take long to get through the 100 quests that come AFTER you've finished the original MSQ which ended after Praetorium. This character in May was only level 31 and I got to 50 and was done the entire game up to the final 2.55 quest 10 days before launch. You guys have got it easy! Before HW launched none of the content gave any experience at all. Not a smidge. Now you get bucket loads of it before you enter HW content. So quit complaining, you get to walk into Ishgard at level 52-53 or more. We had to go in at just level 50. And let us not forget they throw gear at you folks now :P

Seeing the EXP boost and the ilvl70-110 weapon/armour rewards from MSQ and Job quests.. its quite easy to hit Lv.50

I have a member of my FC who just got his ilvl 200 weapon, after only playing the game for 3 or so weeks.

So these kinds of threads seem very odd to me. I get it, you're upset about not walking straight into Ishgard, but really this guy did it fine in 3 weeks time. Unless of course that guy is a god amongst men and didn't need mortal needs such as sleep.

I think we should definitely make more posts showing that we didn't actually read the contents of the topic and just repeat what has already been said 89 times.

Its pretty nice of SE to do a refund when they already warned about this situation.

Most people, not all people, you just answered it yourself. I swear some people in these forums are incapable of understanding that not everyone has the same way of thinking. It'd not have been difficult for SE to just include this in places such as Amazon, PS Network and other sites where they sell the expansion "To enjoy the Heavensward expansion, you must have completed all of the A Realm Reborn Main Story Quest". Maybe not those words exactly but something close would do. Sure enough SE don't have to do it, it'd just be decent of them if they did.

The game is heavily based in the Main Scenario.

What could have made anyone think they could skip a HUGE part (From Praetorium all the way to the Scions' Fall) of the story?

That cause there two types of groups that play XIV there group 1 the final fantasy fans that are playing it cause of FF name and enjoy the story content and group 2 that are the generic mmo players and most likely care less about the story. I can see the two group clash together all the time especially when 2.0 first started.

Yeah, you can thank blizzard for that.

Back in my WoW days, I swear I heard people say "Malfurion who?" more than a handful of times.

Sometimes I think people wanted MMOs to have a League of Legends-like interface. You start the game, there's a 2D web-like lobby interface where you manage your character, and commands to start/find party... click the Duty Finder menu, and BAM, start the instance.

Open world, main scenario, Leveling? NUISANCES. gimme dungeons and bosses to kill, all the rest can be on an optional written backstory that no one will care about.

Kinda felt scammed.

Such a shame. I was pretty excited when I hit lv50, but doing endless fetch quests for virtually no reward (4k exp at lv50) for over a month really killed the game for me.
It's for the best. The content in Ishgard is incredibly similar as the content prior to Ishgard. If you grew bored of the level 1-50 game, I see no reason why you wouldn't be bored with the level 51-60 game. It looks like FFXIV just isn't your type of game! The bright side is you figured this out early and scored a refund to boot.

Hope your next game works out better for you.
