Seeing the EXP boost and the new weapon/armour rewards from MSQ and Job quests.. its quite easy to hit Lv.50, I've seen players Lv.48 with a Green Leaf on their heads (Still fresh). As for the Lv.50 dungeons, you are required to run only the ones that are part of the MSQ, otherwise they all are side dungeons that are only required a clear if and only if you want to unlock high level roulette.

This. A friend of mine took a break just when 2.2 was released, and when he came back I tanked all the new dungeons for him. We got him up to 2.5 level in about three days. Even if you can't play for an entire day it shouldn't really take more than a week or so to catch up on all the post-Praetorium content.

Square just got back to me about my refund for Heavensward. I bought the expansion upon hitting level 50 expecting to move on to Ishgard, etc etc. Turns out I still had to play through all the irrelevant lv50 content, but in the meantime of doing that I grew bored of the game and had no interest in Heavensward, hence getting a refund. Kinda felt scammed.

Sorry, but that's the dumbest reason for a refund ever. You would still access the content eventually, it's not like it's permanently locked away. If you were never able to get to Ishgard, maybe you'd have an argument, but you don't.

Heck, when I bought Final Fantasy XI, I couldn't access Rise of the Zilart nor Chains of Promathia instantly either. I just enjoyed the game until they became available, and moved onto the nice stuff. Oh, and lest we forget that having Heavensward is the only way to unlock level 60, so you're basically wasting all the potential XP you could be earning during this intermission.

If all you wanted was instant gratification, maybe you should have bought a single player game.

I sympathize with the Op, first off I DID finish all the story pre HW, but once you get past the 1 to 50 story the expansions between there and HW contain a bunch of useless stuff. If they trimmed them by 3/4 you could still get all the important points without all the stupid filler they added. I still hope some day they do, heck even some of the 1 to 50 story is a waste of time and adds nothing to the game except annoyance and should be trimmed down.

To be honest if you didn't enjoy the main story enough to play it until Heavensward, you didn't miss out on anything and Heavensward might not be for you. Heavensward content follows literally the same pattern with dungeons and primals as 2.0 did (as of now, at least)

I wish more people voted with their wallets like this. I do like the story, but I agree 100% that it needs to stop with the useless fetch quests. I think 5 MSQ would be quite sufficient instead of 50+ the we have to do. Of course that would mean those 5 quests would need to be a tad longer, but a LOT more meaningful. We all know when new MSQ content is released, most people clear it in two or three days max. Having less MS quests but more quality would only make everyone's life better.

You did the right thing, OP if there was nothing keeping you there.

In the well promoted QnA in March with the SE producer he said right off:

In order to visit Ishgard, you’ll first have to complete the main scenario quest “Before the Dawn,” which will be implemented in Patch 2.55 at the end of this month. For those of you thinking about returning at the start of Heavensward, we recommend coming back a bit earlier to finish off the main scenario quests. With the main scenario completed, you can install Heavensward and immediately accept the first quest of the expansion that will lead you to Ishgard.

The warnings were plastered all over the web for months before release.

Also it does not take long to get through the 100 quests that come AFTER you've finished the original MSQ which ended after Praetorium. This character in May was only level 31 and I got to 50 and was done the entire game up to the final 2.55 quest 10 days before launch. You guys have got it easy! Before HW launched none of the content gave any experience at all. Not a smidge. Now you get bucket loads of it before you enter HW content. So quit complaining, you get to walk into Ishgard at level 52-53 or more. We had to go in at just level 50. And let us not forget they throw gear at you folks now :P

I have a member of my FC who just got his ilvl 200 weapon, after only playing the game for 3 or so weeks.

So these kinds of threads seem very odd to me. I get it, you're upset about not walking straight into Ishgard, but really this guy did it fine in 3 weeks time. Unless of course that guy is a god amongst men and didn't need mortal needs such as sleep.
