The weakness of the merit system is when it makes you choose between traits or omg-new-abilities-!

When you start adding new abilities to the mix you find the merit cap really actually hurts rather than customises.

ESO has a much better middleground where it allows "merits" to alter existing abilities

    Eg.

Option 1 for regen: Faster tics but less total duration
Option 2 for regen: If the target goes below 50% HP, the remaining regen tics are applied all at once for a chunky heal.
Option 3 for regen: Longer overall duration

I do not want FFXIV to become FFXI. You can play that game if you wish. I left it behind years ago.

So what would you like the game to "become"? Because this is an MMORPG - growth is kind of part-and-parcel to this game genre.

If I want to play FFXI, I have an option to do so. I chose to play FFXIV instead and don't need to see a rehash of events, systems, etc. from that game ported into this one. I want FFXIV to become a world class, unique MMORPG, not a rehash of a game that is now 13 years old.

And how would you like to see that done? People have made a suggestion - you haven't. Please provide something constructive.

How do you want to see characters growing and players progressing their characters two patches from now? In a year? In three?

Sorry but after seeing this tired argument of "this is FFXIV not FFXI go play that" - trust me I did. For a decade. I enjoyed it - it had things that I still enjoy and I've found things here I enjoy when I started playing 1.0 - and I've been here through all the changes - from the addition of Job crystals - to today.

I want to see the game grow and feel unique - people provide suggestions about systems they like; essentially your only contribution is "I don't like what you like go away" - which isn't contributing to the discussion of how character growth could be expanded upon or improved. So - got any ideas??

    OK, I'll be specific.

FFXI was all about sidegrading. The armoury system supported this, allowing gear changes mid fight. Merits was the same. Most of them were of very little value but provided for sideways diversification and a valuable "grind" mechanic for SE to hold subscribers.

FFXIV is different. Progression here is vertical, driven through each expansion by gear progression and between by level progression. Having played both styles now, I prefer the FFXIV design and would like future expansions to continue to follow that track.

It's narrow-minded to assume everyone has that option. A lot of people can barely afford time for one MMO and those people (myself included) chose FFXIV over other games for very real reasons (like my wife not being a typical gamer but enjoying XIV). Merits or no merits, it's not unthinkable to let people wish/request systems inspired by features they enjoyed in previous games.

I don't think that I said anywhere that I assumed everyone agreed with me. I was asked for what I wanted and that's what I posted. Obviously everyone has their own opinions.

It's been said in this thread that merits were really a stop gap for capping real progression at level 75. XP was a brutal grind in FFXI - hour after hour of XP parties to barely get a single level. Merits just extended that mechanic. A real grind fest.

I would prefer developers spend their time developing content within the framework of FFXIV's game design. Keep the vertical progression and accelerate the release of new dungeons, raids, recipes and fun side quests (like Hildebrand).

The Merit System can work if they let us increase the tier level of our ability then create new spell lines for the expansions.

The merit system in XI was a stopgap measure because the XI dev team did not want to raise the level cap. And they didn't for like 8 years.

Personally, I'd rather not add in merits or other attribute tweaks until XIV is at 99 cap 3-4 expansions from now and there will not be any more levels.
