E-Sumi-Yan during Level 30 CNJ Quest

    E-Yumi-Yan
I do not propose this arrangement solely with her safety in mind. Given the nature of the investigation, it is like that Sylphie's innate talent for hearing will prove as useful to you as your conjury will to her. There is much you might accomplish together.
Given the context of the quest, and Sylphie's story, I'm certain she has an innate talent for healing, not hearing.

I think, if i'm not mistaken, Sylphie can hear the disturbance on the aether around her and pin point there location better.

I love the official forums, they tell you to use the search for thread about what you wanted to talk but when you use it they judge for necro a thread.

Myrhn is on the right track - 'hearing' is actually the term used to describe CNJs who are especially sensitive to the whisperings of the elementals, and thus are highly regarded in Gridanian society. Hence these talented individuals are called hearers. Sylphie might have a WHM-esque talent for healing, but as it turns out, once she finally let go of her stubborn single-mindedness, she was revealed to be highly sensitive to the words of the elementals, which would allow her to train as a hearer - in no small part thanks to the player's gentle nudging her in that direction.

So yeah, there is no mistake in that line.

Oh. I guess that makes sense. It's just that when he said "with her innate talent for hearing and your talent for conjury..." It made me think her that her hearing/healing would compliment your conjury. Since you are a more talented conjurer than she, as noted by E's dialogue about your potential, I assumed that it referred to her healing. I mean, if conjury is the art of hearing elementals, wouldn't that make you better at it than she is, given your accomplishements? So if you are the more talented CNJ but she has a knack for white magic or whatever she uses, it would make his clause more logical "her healing complimenting your hearing (conjury)" because when i see conjury, i think hearing. So for him to infer her hearing and your conjury sounds redundant to me since you then both have knacks for hearing and there's nothing complimentary about you being a duo team. Meh.

I think this is the source of the confusion, though I'd have to go searching for game text to back it up. Conjury requires hearing the elementals, yes, but it also requires asking them for aid. The aether used in conjury, after all, is that of the land, not the individual. Sylphie is extremely talented at hearing, but she has no inclination or desire at this point in the story to ask them for aid. Thus, while she may be your superior in hearing, she has no ability as a conjurer. Even if her skills at healing rival those of a Conjurer or even White Mage, it does so in a fundamentally different manner.
