Actually I and many others enjoyed that part of 1.0. And it wasn't really a "mess" as you call it. I was able to go do stuff with a buddy of mine instead of waiting for a specific person to fit that role.

Right now White Mage is the only job that retained this ability since White mage get both arcanist and thau's abilities.

And I don't think there is any reason to re-balance this system and for that matter, it will bring balance to the current system. For example, Astrologist will be able to use Virus and Eye for an eye which will be a nice.
