I think some people here are mistaken. WoW's drop is subscriptions is due entirely to the increasing popularity of Diablo 3 in China. At least that's the conclusion that Activision told their investors, and they would never lie about such a thing.

When WoW finally breathes it's last breath, I'm pretty sure that Bobby Kotick will say, "aw shucks folks, it's all because the return of Guitar Hero was too successful. People sure do love playing Activision games!"

It's funny because I'm seeing oh so familiar complaints on these forums that I saw on WoW's forums.

I'm personally glad Blizzard has expanded outside MMO and RTS genre. I've enjoyed Hots with a friend quite alot. WoW though, the poor cash cow has been fattened into a big, fat blob. I can't even look at the game without feeling sadness and disgust. The core game, while not perfect by any means, was made with love and pride yet now has ended up in life support.

Competition is good in gaming genre. The final stab to WoW will come from inside the company. Sadly, they're doing good work at it.

Why do people treat their mmos like this? Why is variety a bad thing? Why must everything be about "killing" another game? Is that other game doing any harm to you? Are you somehow threatened that some people enjoy something that you don't? It is the mindset of an ignorant child. I'm reminded of my niece not wanting my son to eat a candy bar because she doesn't like chocolate. Get over it and get over yourselves.

There is no reason to discuss wow on the FF14 forums in the first place as it has nothing to do with FF. Yoshi has proven what matters to this game is being a quality game that truly delivers to his player base via good story and game play. At no point, in any of the live letters, did Yoshi say, " gee I really hope to end that other game cause I'm a malicious prick". Re-assess your gaming attitudes as this is shameful for any gamer who should appreciate the effort that goes into creating what can only be defined as art.

Blizzard lost 50% of it's subscriber base (myself included) in 6 months. Trust me when I say they don't need any help failing at this point.

I'd much rather FFXIV not kill WoW. I def don't want thier community coming to FFXiV. I am perfectly happy with WoW being the super easy MMO that all the instant gratification kids play. Then FFXIV can grow into something much better, regardless of the number of subs. I'd rather have an awesome game with 1 million subs, then a 5.6 million sub facebook game (garrisons). Stop copying what WoW does and keep giving us cool stuff.

SE isn't going to attack Blizzard or WoW or any other MMO/company. Unlike some of their player base, they have class.

    This is true.
It's good when WoW doesn't leave FFXIV and the other games completely in the shadow anymore. Which is the case now.
But WoW dying completely would be a bad thing for MMOs anywhere.

The industry is already in decline.
You don't want that behemoth that is WoW. which put MMO's into the spotlight, to give up.
It's good if they fall into a smaller place as the industry continues along.
But if they just go away, it'll really leave a void in the MMO world (whatever your feelings on the state of the game is) which might spark the end of an era.

I've always said that WoW was the king of MMOs in the same way that Budweiser is the King of Beers.

I'd put XIV currently as the Sam Adams of MMOs to WoW's Budweiser. Not quite a real craft beer (compared to XI or ESO or Wildstar), but many notches above the piss water that most American lagers are. I could contently drink nothing but Sam Adams for a long time. (If I didn't live in a town with three very good local craft breweries making the nectar of the gods accessible for next to nothing, I probably would.)

Just like I will contently play XIV for a long time.

To break out of that metaphor, I think WoW was killed by three factors:
    - Other MMOs came along that were as good, if not better when it came to gameplay (ESO, Wildstar) - and they went free to play to siphon off the cheap people
    - League of Legends pulled most of the PVP fans, and Hearthstone pulled all the rest
    - XIV pulled all the people who wanted better graphics

That leaves the only people playing WoW as the people who genuinely loved the Warcraft universe, or who are afraid to branch out into other games. WoW can live comfortably if that number stays over a million.

Meh. Id rather see both wow and ff14 do more or less equally well. I dislike the idea of a single product dominating the market.
