    Am I the only one fed up with DPS obsession?

    I feel like SE's idea for PLD's new abilities was to make them a supplemental healer in the OT position, counterpart to WAR's OT position of supplementary DPS, but nobody seems to give a crap about unique play stile. All anyone ever talks about is DPS. "How can we push more DPS out of the tanks? How can we push more DPS out of the healers? We need to change everything so that DPS is better." Seems like a bunch of corporate fat-cats screeching about the bottom line, and the $$$ of FFXIV is DPS. The squeaky wheel spoke, the Dev's answered, and now we're painted into a corner where only DPS is "viable." i.e. "If you make PLD a healer, you should be able to replace a healer with a DPS. If it can't DPS, nobody will play it."

    You should play it because it's fun because this is a GAME.

    Yes.

    But to expand on the reasoning why it's important is because the game is designed with certain DPS checks at a certain level of gear.
    Your options early in a release are to do an extended amount of DPS from any source possible, or wait without clearing until you get more gear or find players who have that level of skill.

    In the current end-game, DPS is currently king because enrage timers exist in all facets of the game.
    Skilled players are accomplishing this and other skilled players get upset that everyone isn't as skilled as them, or unskilled players find an outlet to rationalize their low dps (ex: PLD dps sucks, please buff, etc)

    What? enrage timers have existed for pretty much most MMO bosses for the majority of MMOs... doesn't mean they had to buff tank damage.

    I agree with OP - I miss the times where tanks were there to generate threat, mitigate damage and stop others from dying. Look at PLD in XI, or vanilla WoW warriors. That's what tanking should be.

    No thanks, I don't want to go back to the days of tickling normal quest mobs for an hour because I'm a tank and "tanks don't do damage".

    I would also like to add that the DPS obsession has contributed to the community mindset of "Bring the Job, not the player" when comes to Statics determining which Jobs they should bring to Savage Alexander for putting out the maximum DPS numbers. So far, the best Savage raid composition is:

    Tanks
    * Warrior
    * Dark knight

    Healers
    * White Mage
    * Scholar

    Damage Dealers
    * Dragoon
    * Ninja
    * Black Mage/Summoner
    * Bard/Machinist

    Paladins, Monks, and especially Astrologians are now the three least sought after jobs in Alexander Gordias Savage. I got messages from PF Statics ranging from "Sorry, were not interested in bringing a PLD/MNK/AST into our static group." to "LOL! Go reroll!"

    In many new startup Statics, nobody wants a Paladin because of they have the lowest DPS of the 3 tanks especially when they're using Shield Oath. Warriors have Maim to offset their 25% overall DPS loss plus they also have have Unchained. A good Warrior MT can quickly squeeze in 3 Fell Cleaves before going back into Defiance. Dark Knights are able the have Darkside up at the same time with Grit.

    I agree that Tanks and Healers should be able to deal dandy damage. I love DPS stances to pieces, sincerely. What I don't love is the cyclical problem of "Give us more DPS." "Okay here it is, but the bosses now have more health." "Okay we need more DPS to kill the tougher bosses." "Okay here's more DPS, but now the tanks and healers have to DPS if you wanna survive."

    Hard content shouldn't be hard because you have to do something other than your job. Se should be developing content that is engaging and fun for tanks to tank, and healers to heal. Dealing damage shouldn't be the only factor that makes content fun.

    I'm with you on stop this dps obsession.
    Are static has a Pld, and drk and we beat everything in game besides savage. We cleared Faust dps check as well.
    Static is Pld, drk, SMN, blm, mech, monk, whm, Astro.
    We now are getting the 200 weapons this week so it's even going to help even more.

    The game is about killing bosses. You're not gonna heal things to death, so doing damage is the only way and this will never change.

    If you don't want to do damage you probably should play a different genre.

    So in reality the tanks/healers actually have 2 jobs to do and the DPS classes only one job to do? No wonder there are more DPS class players, taking the easy way out.

    Actually that is what kind of happens, healers keep the tank alive, tanks keep the DPS and everyone else from taking damage, and then in turn can kill the boss. I think a lot of people forgot how the party system works
