First, you have to figure out which ward would normally have the item you want to buy, and even that's not always straightforward.
Then you once you get that sorted out, you get a list of Retainers and the Ward they are in. But it's all too easy to look at the price, think to yourself that you'd be willing to pay it, select that you want to put red stars on retainers selling that item which closes the search window, and at that point, you remember that the retainer probably isn't selling the item in the proper ward.
So then, you have to perform the item search again to get the name of the ward that the retainer you want to buy from is standing in.
Then you choose to teleport to the ward and play "find the retainer." Well, it turns out more than one retainer is selling the item, in the wrong ward, and since you didn't take the time to note the gibberish name, you'll just have to click on all of them until you find the one with the right price.
Congrats. Now you've bought one thing. If you want anything else, you'll have to repeat the process, ad nauseum.
Now, for selling.
To do that, you have to take a retainer "off-line" so that your storage is no longer going to accessible except at the exact Ward you're going to drop it off in. I've never heard of an Auction House that shut down your bank before, but there it is.
Not only do you have no idea if your Retainer has actually sold anything, you also don't know if it has been kicked from the ward due to a crash, a server shutdown, or some other reason.
Also, you're taxed at a higher rate for selling item in the wrong ward, but you only have 2 retainers with 10 slots each. Add to the fact that there's a retainer population limit in each ward and popular wards are always too full to add any more retainers. It's inevitable you're going to end up being taxed higher because you simply can't avoid it, and this is during a time when there's hardly anyone playing the game.
There are just so many problems with this system, that when it gets reviewed for a second time, the economy will be ridiculed in the press once more (they took over a year to fix the game, and this is all they could come up with? the inventors of the auction house?)
It looks bad. Real bad. This can't be the primary way to buy and sell in this game. Reviewers will hack the game to bits over something so convoluted, flawed and user-unfriendly as the Market Wards.
