Rebrand Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn into a Persistent Open World Game

Since the rise of multiplayer and always online philosophy developers have been making persistent open world games to avoid calling them MMO's in order to merge the single player experience with having multiple players. Even though Destiny, The Crew and the upcoming Divison are clearly MMO's developers just aren't calling them that becuase of the negative image they invoke the of a hardcore player instead of the casaul market they are trying to capture. Develpers are taking the MMO industry and evolving it into MMO ultra lite because its easier to recoup the cost of the ip.

lol no. Call it Instanced Game with Big Lobbies because MMO ultra lite is exactly where FFXIV falls into.

There was a pretty relevant article on IGN posted about this today.

It's definitely an attempt to make money from a wider audience. One may refuse to ever try an MMO due to its hardcore rep and negative image. However, when labelled differently the exact same game can be seen in a different light. Destiny is the perfect example of trying to run away from its MMO tag to make more money.

Everyone knows Destiny is just an MMO with Halo gameplay though. What Destiny is really an example of is that the unwashed masses are lemmings who will buy anything if you spend enough on marketing.

Developers have moved away from "open world" content in MMOs because it only lets the first group who got to it experience it.
Everyone else waits for a respawn.

Open world pvp is just a plain source of grief in other MMOs, where max level players in great gear go to a lowbie leveling zone and proceed to ruin everyones day until they're forced to leave, only to go to a different zone and do it again.

Even dungeons became instanced because nothing sucked more than wanting to do something but finding out that there's a group just ahead of you that's already cleared it.

If anything, our devs have a solution in the Leve System. Utilize the principle of it to make things out in the open world, like a mini dungeon in a beastman stronghold that only your group can interact with.
But even if they did something like this, people wouldn't do it because they only do things that get the very best gear.
