    Tons of Crafting Mats

I'm speaking of all the 1-5 piece stacks of "stuff" one collects while leveling. I've gotten a retainer, but now I'm overrun with this stuff. Not to mention some of what seem to be the same item don't stack (one seems to have some extra graphic swirlie).

Gathering and crafting I haven't really dealt with, but am unsure how much of this stuff will prove to be useful in the future. In the "other" MMO, I do cooking & alchemy to make my own buff food, pots & flasks (am raider over there).

I put some of it up for sale, but I have no clue how many small amounts of so many different things anyone really needs! I've put them all at the suggested price (1-5 gil per oiece for most items), but when I look over it, and look at how fast gil is acquired (from the end of June when I started to now I have over 213k gil) I see it almost isn't worth it to put too much effort to selling the stuff. Maybe I'd be better standing by a merchant and selling them off?

    Anyway, looking for advice!

The extra graphic swirl indicates the item is High Quality. High Quality ingredients make it easier to produce High Quality items when you craft, which usually means better stats.

I've found crafting fun while levelling and I've made a lot of my own gear, potions and food. (I'm not saying this is the most efficient way to do things but if you don't mind taking the time to do it, it can be worth while. I wouldn't recommend it if you are trying to hit max level a.s.a.p.)

As to selling, that 'suggested' price is the amount of gil you will get if you sell the item to an npc. Look at the top right (I think) of the window that opens when you put an item up for sale. There is a button to 'compare prices', clicking that shows you what other players are selling the item for in the market-place. Next to that is a 'History' button which shows you what the item has sold for over the last few days.

If you are going to start crafting, I'd also suggest doing a web-search for a basic crafting guide. This one might be a good place to start. http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps4/718931-f...orn/faqs/68530 Happy crafting!

I have 4 retainers all full and a nearly full player inventory. I sell stuff worth over 100 a piece on the MB and just vendor the rest usually. But if you want to start crafting I would save EVERYTHING if possible, so maybe buy some more retainers if you really want. I think its $1 extra a month?

I'd suggest using the "history" feature mentioned above to see what the going rate for the items you have is, especially the HQ items (those with the extra shiny/swirly graphic). I also started playing fairly recently (end of May or end of June, can't remember) and have made friends with the Market Board and have what feels like a HUGE amount of gil.

That being said, what I have on hand already is a drop in the bucket of what's needed I think, especially if I ever have the opportunity to purchase a housing lot. Housing lots on my server started out at 4.2 MILLION gil when they were originally released, and when I started playing the only lots left were going for well over 10mil.

What I'm getting at is that it may seem like this game hands you loads of gil on a platter, but it really doesn't if you want to participate in some of the content later on. Even a special mount that you can buy from one of the Beast Tribes after doing dailies to get your reputation to the required level to purchase it goes for over 100,000 gil.

You can also go to this site:

    http://xivdb.com/

and look items up to see what they're used for and decide whether to sell or keep.

    Have fun!

Always check item sale history as others have said. Else you run the risk of selling things at a microscopic fraction of their real value, the default price shown when first put item for sale is price get from selling to NPC vendors and should not be used as the price you put it in for on the market. For example lets say I catch a titanic sawfish, the default price shown when try to put in market might only be couple hundred gil but looking at history from few days ago they actually sell for around 700,000-750,000 gil last I checked on my server/world.

You can also have 2 retainers for free in game rather than just one, additional ones can be purchased through mogstation. Also if like me and find self hording gathering materials etc, I tend to sell the normal quality while keeping the high quality ones for later. One more thing is never automatically buy gear upgrades from the market because people tend buy NPC gear for very cheap from the NPC's and then try to resell for extortionate amounts on the market. There are exceptions like crafted gear which are not from NPC's but always best to check if NPC sells gear looking at before buy it from market.

Thanks for the info! Am kinda focusing on the main story quest line AND ranking up in the GC, first need to decide what crafting classes to do (and THAT will dictate what gathering I need to level up).

AND wise words snuggle, I'm not spending gil on buying gear (one exception I did get a new shield because it was lacking, but I didn't spend all that much, few hundred gil) because I think I'm getting good enough from the main story quest line (MSQ, rght?). Not unlike the Auction House in the "other" MMO! Crafted gear there is kinda king because it CAN be upgraded to raid levels and one can re-roll secondary stats to better suit one's class, AND I don't think FFXIV does that!

In that case I recommend doing the GC Provisioning and Supply 'quests'. Every day you can turn items in to the GC in exchange for seals and xp. Handing in HQ will double your reward. If the item has a star by it, the reward is already double what it would be normally and again, handing in HQ items will double the reward that's shown.
The list changes daily at 9pm server time. It's not like a regular quest, if you have the item in your bag and the list resets you won't be able to hand it in.

Hmmm, thought those were closely associated with crafting & gathering and I have yet to really get those rolling, but now I'll look to do some!

If you plan to focus your (eventual) crafting on Culinarian and Alchemist for consumables, then you could keep the crafting mats identified as "Ingredient" or "Reagent" items, while selling others (Leather, Bone, Wood, Stone, Cloth).

Because of the way cross-class skills work, you will actually want to do the other crafting classes some, too, however. For top-tier endgame crafting, you pretty much need at least most or preferably all of the crafting classes leveled clear up to 50, but for most recipes, getting the other classes to 15 for the first set of cross-class skills is enough. Since you can get low level mats from vendors, you don't need to worry about hoarding items for classes you're only taking that far. (After you've gotten CUL and ALC to 50 or above and the others to 15, you can decide whether it's worthwhile to get some or all of the others to 50 as well. At that point, check some online guides to decide which of the level 50 cross-class skills look the best, and prioritize other classes accordingly.)

On my server there are several key crafting items that people actually buy to craft. Beyond that they will only sell if they are ingredients in levequests items. Most of the markets like shards and such are just a bunch of people doing pump and dump scams with few legit buyers
