Thancred left to investigate something shady, Thancred is unaccounted for when the scions are attacked, Thancred is later seen to have been possessed by the shady stuff he went to investigate, and judging from your magitek armor mount, I assume you know that defeating Lahabrea without killing Thancred in the process is the finale to the 2.0 storyline. The character is thus introduced, the problem is set up, and the situation is resolved. Literally the definition of "doing something" with a twist.

It's not like he was a never-before-seen character who was defeated by accident during his first appearance.
