After a couple of matches, I've come to this realization; A lot of them (more than I'd like anyway), have favorable node spawns for typically the cave team Pirates, while the other two GCs, Coin and Snacks are fighting at the beach side of the map for the two nodes there. Or flip it around, Coin and Pirates fighting for two nodes in caves, while Snacks comfortably with both nodes at beach.
Anyhoo, assume the former. Pirates are at 600/800 with two nodes. Both Coin and Snacks are on the other side at 300/800 with one node. If Coin were to bugger off and go after Pirates, Snacks would easily overtake their node and fall behind in points, while they futily go after pirates due to travel distance. They will fall to last place if they do this because they can't reasonably overtake a defensive team when you consider the travel time and the fact that you are fighting a defensive team. Vice versa happens if Snacks decide to go after Pirates but Coin takes over the beach node and gets ahead. They would get third place while the team that stayed behind and take both nodes would get second.
Or, if they both cooperate and go after pirate's side of the map, they'll both bleed points out them through kills, take over the nodes and close the gap in point difference. Whatever happens after that would be dependent on what they choose, but the point is, now they have a better shot of getting first place.
If both Coin and Snacks choose to stay on their side and keep fighting over the nodes, their points at best will stay even with each other, and the game will eventually end with Pirates being first. This creates a circumstance where even placing second or third would be foggy at best, but any chance of obtaining first is thrown out of the window.
After some thought, it reminded me on the concept of Prisoner's Dilemma, as well as a graphic novel game that (nicely) utilizes the concept very effectively.
For me, honestly first place only matters to me since I';m only sticking around until I get my ADS mount. At the same time, I always know that whoever my team is fighting with has this weird fixation on us and never leaves us alone, even if a favorable circumstance is present.
What do you personally think of this, and what would you personally do if situations like this (and they will) arise?
Or is it too much thinking and you're gonna go full yolo and be the hero?
