Reminds me of Library of the Ancients in FFV! I'm all for this idea!
I can't say enough how much a robust bestiary and lore compendium would do for making the game have more lastabillity and depth.
Please don't do it haphazardly though, I imagine I'm not the only person who would rather the lore team take alot of time weaving a bestiary and lore compendium together rather than tossing it in some menue and giving it little outside of that.
I want artwork (Concept art would work as well) of the monsters when I fill out my bestiary pages, likewise with a lore-book. The more work you put into it the more you will get a big chunk of respect and have something for us hardcore lore junkies to keep going back to for ages.
Interesting idea, Onizuka.
Adding non-essential elements like this to the game would really help bolster the immersion & quality of the game world, but I doubt the developers view it this way; they see resources & development time going into something that a majority of the players may have little interest in.
I agree 100% - I love Lore, and Final Fantasy XIV's is becoming more and more in-depth, and is becoming my favorite overall because of the open-nature of the game (and the fact that it's an MMO). Because it's an MMO, it's capable of immersing the player deeper into the world in which they play; other people to talk to, feats that can only be completed with teamwork and skill, and large gorgeous maps peppered with little intrigues and wonders. Then, when you start adding in back story to things like hard-to-access, seemingly out of place stonehenge-like ruins, men-sized holes in the ground, or topographical anomalies in general. In my opinion, the more the better; the richer the story, the more evident that these guys care about their game, plus it's an investment to the expansiveness of our world and future content. By a logical standpoint, adding in more information like History, Language, Culture, Bestiaries, et cetera, not only breathes a little more life into the world, but makes adding in new content easier for the developers, and could even boost PR for SE.* I also think using pre-existing or expanded information like this would also provide quality content that could help maintain a certain standard that would become a norm with time, i.e. Sidequests would be deeper than just going and killing 'Monster X' for 'NPC Y' because of 'Sob-story Z.' Players could feel a deeper connection and/or understanding of an instance they just entered... that is, before they run across the map in 5 minutes and kill the final boss (...lol, gooooo, ARR). Honestly, the deeper the lore, the more interesting the game becomes in general. But seriously, enough for my rant, I'm for the idea 100% sir, /signed
*It would be pretty cool if the Community could periodically choose things from any of these subjects, and using something as subject manner, new and interesting, lore-driven content could be generated.
[EDIT]
I agree, to a degree, but they've made up stuff before, they're doing some inadvertently simply by making content, and there could be other means by which to get it made fast and easy, and that's by asking the community like they oftentimes do. Theoretically, they could just hold events where players write lore about a particular person, place, or thing - the community/developers snag the ones they like, expand or modify the ideas, and release them in whatever medium they so choose. Of course, I think if this were to turn into a thing, it'd be nice to acknowledge/credit the original creator... Maybe in the Great Library, the Book Authors could have the player names in them, and perhaps the authors could get a unique item called the "Author's Cap" which isn't particularly useful, but is aesthetically pleasing... you could also mark on each player's cap the book title under the Description, but that might be asking for a little too much.
