Concern about the Economy upon PS3 launch

Prices are really low now for most things compared to the early months of the game. Mid level stuff including components like canvas cloth could be ridiculously expensive. Now it is all widely available at minimal cost.

Shards and crystals are now available for next to nothing compared to most of the game's lifespan.

Sometimes, lowbie gear is pricey now, but here's why.

Most people looking for lowbie gear are old players leveling new jobs. There is very little demand for low level gear currently.

When the PS3 players come in, a lot of their low level crafters will make low level gear for reasonable prices.

If the new people don't craft, they'll have tons of money, if they do craft and don't gather they'll have no money, if they craft and gather they'll have less money. Those who craft to make a profit of course are not included. I merely just rank up on crap that I sell back to npcs and I do make back quite a deal.

I'm pretty curious to see how it turns out as well. I'm guessing it will be a lot like what happened in XI when JP's had a year headstart on the economy, but even worse here. They monopolized nearly every part of the market. FFXIV's economy is possibly one of the worst I've seen in an MMO to date. Who knows when PS3 launch will happen, but I think it's pretty safe to assume it's at least another year off. By that point, people will have so much gil that the new guys will have no hope of competing in the market.

Their hands are tied, but a late (2+ years) start for new players is going to put a lot of people off. If XI is any indication, it breeds an elitist community that will scoff at the new guys.

New players would form LS on their own and be self-sufficient. What's the point of gil anyway apart from supposed gil sink? Everything is self-sufficient made easy these days.
