There's no such thing as F2P. There's:

1) Freemium. Free to make an account, but you end up paying more per month than you would on a subscription game in the Cash shop.

2) F2F, or Free to Freeload. Those who play the game without spending any money and freeload off the payments from those who play Freemium style.

Well, to answer the OPs question: I don't think I'd play this game if it went F2P simply because as it is designed now, it just isn't a good fit for the model. Games like Path of Exile are built for it, but FFXIV would have to take things out of the game and monetize them to make F2P work.

The biggest reason I don't want this game to go free to play is because of one other MMO that did: TERA Online. That game is a complete circus. Police car mounts, constant stream of costumes that have zero fitting into the game's environment, hot dog weapon skins, an economy that's completely tanked because of the cash shop and etc.

I would still play it if it was FTP, assuming I still enjoyed the gameplay. I pick games based on fun factor, not the business model.

Probably not...it really depends on how it was done...but I really don't think that would work out so well. Although I did have a ton of fun with Defiance and that was free to play.

Outlasted WoW? Last I checked WoW still had 7+ million active subscribers, and a new expansion coming out soon.

Fendred also forgot to mention the Everquest (came out long before FFXI and WoW) is still going strong. Even though it went F2P just a couple of years ago, it still makes enough money for them to release expansions. I loved FFXI, but EQ will always still hold a special place in my heart and since it's still available to play (albeit a lot different from what I remember) means to me it's still one of the longest and most successful MMOs out there (Ultima Online is another).
