Many posters here don't seem to realize that FFXI eventually upgraded from the key item system to the claim check system. Both had their advantages. The claim check system consumed an item of your inventory, but it allowed you to store partial sets of AF, and even multiple sets all on one ticket. The closest comparison to its FFXIV counterpart is the armoire.

And that's where I think the biggest improvement could be implemented. I think more gear should qualify for armoire storage. Now that 2.0 jobs are getting myth gear for completing their level 50 quest, myth gear should be added to that list.

I don't mind the inventory space. I'd like to see a free retainer or two with each expansion. That would solve the inventory space dilema - especially since they are adding a way to load gearsets from retainers.

Eh, egg on my face, then. Must be a PC thing, cuz on PS4, I only ever see one page of 25 slots for Key Items. I've never actually filled the entire page, but with the right quests open I know I easily could have. It could be that a second page becomes selectable once the first page is full, but by default the second page isn't viewable on PS4, as far as I know.

If there really is no limit to the number of Key Item pages, then it probably wouldn't be terrible to implement armor storage using Key Items - though it does have the potential of introducing a lot of clutter to the Key Item inventory...

SE needs to do something about inventory. Even the armoury chest is running out of room now that there are 12 fighting jobs, 8 crafting and 3 gathering, each with unique gear. That fills 23/25 slots, leaving only 2 for situational gear sets. That will be gone completely once the next jobs are released.

For general storage, there are some big space killers. Culinarian ingredients takes up a full 3 pages of one of my 4 retainers. Fishing tackle has long been a problem. Dye, materia, gardening supplies, are all things that can burn space quickly.

Designing a solution should reflect the current pain points.

A separate tackle box would be huge for in field inventory. New storage options (maybe tied to housing but that is another sore point for many) could be designed such as a Pantry (for cooking materials and food), a Garden Shed for seeds, soil, chocobo raising supplies. One advantage of housing tied storage is that there is no need to load data unless you are in the housing zone.
