FF14 has a great community!

I wish there was something SE could do about the private message spamming. Due to all the whispers we all get from these guys I ignore my whispers and sometimes just play with /busy on. I can't help but wonder if I missed any actual interactions from other players.
I love this game. Only two things detract from my experience so far. The constant whisper spam and the poor maintenance times and durations.

Does anyone else feel similarly?

Edit: Lets not forget that I think you guys are GREAT! I've read so many posts about new players having great experiences with other FF14 players and it really makes me feel good knowing that. So keep on being GREAT guys

The game's community was pretty bad following the initial rush of people looking to try the shiny new MMO when ARR dropped, but after resubbing nearly a year later I've been impressed with how generally nice FFXIV's community is now that things have quieted down a little. There are still a few bad apples but you get those everywhere.

I see the "community" in the lens of my server. Meaning, I take all of my experiences and opinions through Adamantoise, and the people that reside there. I thoroughly enjoy my server, and while there are bad apples, I simply distance myself from them and choose not to create drama.


On the matter of RMT spam, Adamantoise is a smaller server so we were hit hard pre 3.0, but now it's not nearly as bad. I guess I tend to ignore it, and I'm also part of enough social linkshells that I communicate through those instead of /tells. I hope that helps!

I wonder how much of that is due to the whisper spams making the whisper system ineffective.
If I ever wanted to PM someone I'd hesitate now because I am pretty sure they won't even look at it or miss it completely due to the spamming.

I think the RMT is a great deal of the reason why it's so non-social. People won't talk to each other if anything they say is going to be flooded out by spam or not seen at all due to so many people turning their chat off.
I have occasionally talked to other players through /tell or /shout, and it really helps to make the game seem more welcoming and friendly, but you're right that it doesn't come up very often. I blame the RMT spammers (and SE for allowing all that spam through) for the fact that we see so little of it.

Sadly, DF has a hand in making it less social too :/ Since people figure "Oh, I won't see them again, no point in talking" and most use it to get through content, so then they never do things with people on their server. Not to mention XIV kinda encourages people to not be social too (solo story/job quest instances, solo queueing for expert is faster than queueing with 1 other person)

I feel the same way. I made a tab just for /tells and turned the sound off, and I occasionally check it to see if an actual player sent me anything. I'm on Adamantoise, and I do infrequently receive messages from people. More often than not, it's just RMT. For smaller servers, you might just want to turn off /tells entirely. At least, that was my experience.

I find the maintenance times to be annoying. They're normally at 2am for me, but I'm a nighthawk and those are my active hours, so I'm normally rushing to get things done before getting booted. We seem to get it about every 3 days. Makes me wonder what they're doing, exactly.
