A pointless time sink does not increase something's difficulty. Who are you to say that people shouldn't play how they want? You might start caring when there isn't anything fun to do at all, because it was easy to do.
Just saying, some game content needs to have legs to be engaging, not everything can be "Wham bam thank ya mam" Thankfully it looks like the Materia system will provide the some deeper content that the game sorely needs.
if people wanna farm it, who cares?
Personally I think it'd be pointless and frankly dumb to make people run out and do a fight and then make them wait a day to do it again. Arbitrary limitation just getting in the way of enjoying content.
Materia grinding is going to be a massive task for not only crafters but fighters and gatherers to get the best materia and take the time to get the best attatchments.
Crafters are only a small part of the puzzle that is materia grinding.
-Spirit bond grinding
-Sorting through the good and bad materia
-Getting a weapon to attatch
-Getting the materials to attatch the materia
-Finding a crafter to do the same attatch
-Praying is doesn't explode
In the end you have a system that is gruelingly difficult but with "Perceivable" amazing results. The gear your going to get from Boss battles will be mediocre at best compared to a customized 5 sloted +3 weapon of your choice. (At least it better be) Because if it's not the materia system will collect dust for being too hard for too little reward.
While I abhoar the "Please everyone" development style it is what they are trying to do. The people who need to have the most elite gear will probably spend more time obtaining materia than they would fighting ifirit, in turn allowing them to crush ifirit with the higher end gear allowing more casual or less skilled players benifit from the strength of the "Hardcore" peirs. Casual players can either fight Ifirit with their own groups or grind some lower tier materia or less slotted items for the fear of loosing the item they don't have "Time" to obtain more of.
Casual players can do any of the content, and Hardcore players have at least one system they can sink alot of time into and in the end also help the casual players in the long run.
It's far from a ideal system...but I can see where they are going with it.
I shouldn't even waste my time you don't even understand how time sinks don't just make content harder to do, but give it much more longevity. I could see a 15 minute cooldown if it was some sort of harrowing journy to get to his fight...but who are we kidding? It wont be hard to walk (Or teleport I bet) to near his fight.
Give it a day or two and the fight will be buttoned down to the letter, the best classes and skill sets will be known and the items will start to flow like water through the flood-gates. Hell the dungeon is a better idea than this, it involves going through the dungeon that takes a good chunk of time no matter how fast you are.
making the content take time helps it have longevity, makes players take some more time to formulate a proper setup before charging in headfirst with the first 8 people they happen across. I can imagine the first day will be people smashing their heads into a wall trying to "See what sticks" as they would say.
If people could "Play how they want" in everything games would suck, I'm sorry to say but limitations and restrictions are part of how developers make a game fun, interesting, and be so for more than 5 minutes.
Perhaps if you need to take a trip through the New dungeon in Ul'dah to get to his lair I would be less, pessemistic about the idea. At least then when people "Call it a day" they need to go through the dungeon again...but again I think I might be overestimating SE's abillity to say no to players.
You have your idea of what is "Fun" as do I. My idea of fun is radically different than yours I would assume, and yes it includes limitations and restrictions on what you can do and sometimes when or how often. I want this game to have challenges that last.
I don't want updates to release and watch the community smash through the content and then say "What now?" and then twiddle their thumbs until the next update releases.
I'm at least looking forward to the materia system to be a system that has legs, it looks like it could take a long time to get the perfect materia layout on your equipment, lets hope the reward is worth the investment.
No thanks on long cooldowns. They did it right with Darkhold and just made it harder with a low cooldown.
People said the same about Instanced Raid timers, thinking that everyone would just spam them back to back... But in reality, that just doesn't happen does it...
Nope, in fact people still does it today.
Not really big on timers IN the dungeons. I say let people do it back to back as much as they want. I say take the in dungeon timers out also. Some groups stress different forms of combat...some are defensive some are DD. There is something to be said about the slow and steady method. Maybe if they had increasingly more difficult mobs that pop and seek out the party that might be a better option rather than rushing. People can play as what they want to play as and adjust as they want to. Run and gun parties are nice but constantly doing them wears on the soul a bit. I can hardly tell a story about something if it only lasts 25 mins (talking about speed runs), hell it takes more time to set runs up anymore and get there than it does to do the actual run. Lack of success, constantly changing party members to insure people get a chance to play with LS mates and working with pick up parties present some obstacles that are hard to overcome. I say if they want to play a dungeon for 3 hours then let them. If it takes them an hour to beat Ifrit then so be it. The raids should have many many ways to approach them, not just a handful (and no I am not talking about just optimal parties). Not everyone has all the battle classes to 50, most are not interested in doing that. If it takes them longer to do the content then they should be allowed to do so. Should there be timed raids? Sure. Should they all be that way? I don't think they should.
They are introducing public lowlevel dungeon next patch that doesnt have timer.
