One of the level 20 Main Scenario quests will have you join a Grand Company (The Immortal Flames of Ul'dah, the Twin Adder of Gridania, or the Maelstrom of Limsa Lominsa). You won't be able to join a Free Company until you've bought the game though. It's one of the limitations of the Free Trial.
