You have a year to claim the free upgrade, dont worry about it :PI'd like to know for sure as well....I'm not going to miss out on a free upgrade potentially because I have to wait till "mid august" for them to make it compatible with Windows 10. I'm not going to upgrade and not be able to play the game either, not with savage alexander progression and weekly tome caps to hit. Screw that noise.
Windows 10 upgrade is free for a year, so I will wait it out to see any problems first.
Just a word of warning to folks, people are confirming lower performance issues on games, especially those running off Nvidia GTX series cards. If you are unsure of upgrading to Win10, I would highly recommend not doing so until some updates come in. For FFXIV in particular, I would recommend holding back until developers confirm it is safe to upgrade.
I am definitely waiting on my personal PC. Need to give companies time to make sure they are updated and optimized for the new OS.
Watch your drivers as well with Windows 10 - I have not installed it in any personal PCs that I run at home - however I have been testing it in my office environment and have confirmed that the earlier test builds all the way up to the latest test build / official release has stripped out several essential drivers just to operate a Dell monitor and the IDE ATA/ATAPI controller. Been reinstalling this stuff all morning.
Everyone will receive it for free it they choose to upgrade, otherwise SE doesn't have to have it supported at launch cause it not listed as a supported OS at least not yet.
The version of Windows 10 that was released today wasn't even finalised until about 2 weeks ago (which is why there's a slight delay in shipping new computers direct from manufacturers as they didn't have it either to get it integrated/installed). Up until that point W10 was constantly being modified so from SE's point of view they probably didn't want to spend too many resources on compatibility for a product that was still changing.
That being said, their statement about Windows 10 support was released a week ago and said "We are currently performing operation verifications". We don't actually know at what point they started their testing. For all we know they've been working on this a long time, but until the final version actually got released they couldn't be 100% sure about anything.
It's in their interest to fully support Windows 10 so I'm sure they'll do it as fast as they can and as they've said they're hoping to get it done by around middle of August (3 weeks). You've got a year to upgrade and given that an operating system change is a pretty big deal it can be worth waiting at least a few weeks for software/applications to become compatible, but if you don't mind having some potential early adopter problems you can of course upgrade now, that's up to you.
Mine is downloaded and ready for me to install but I am holding off on doing so. I want to see how it performs and what fixes they make before they install it. I'll give it a couple months at least before I actually do jump in, unless, of course, it actually runs perfect from the get go for everyone. And considering this is Microsoft we are talking about here...
I've installed, not a single problem bar Windows automatically installing an Nvidia driver incorrectly - installed from Nvidia's site and everything's good. Everything seems to work 100% fine, FFXIV has had the most testing and has yet to show any problems. Performance wise, the game seems about the same as 8.1.
