there are a bunch of pretty sites (and some scouting in pvp) i want to get a closer look at, but i can't with this FoV.

As much as I like this idea, I don't see it happening due to potential issues with players getting to high locations and trying to look outside the map areas only to find issues that would be otherwise hidden, much for the same reason we can't fly in non HW areas. Still, if it ever does get implemented, you can bet I would be using them quite often to view far off regions....
Another MMO I used to play had a few features like this, I enjoyed it. I would love to see stuff like this in FFXIV.

During 1.0 and ARR beta it was possible to zoom in and out in 1rst person camera mode
Personally I think the so-called 'zoom in' in this game is utterly useless. All it really does id get your char out of any screenshot you may want to take. But enlarge anything? Forget it...
A true zoom will allow you to find those quest mobs/items/poorly hi-lighted destination points, more easily instead of having to futilely run hither and yon. Not to mention getting vastly more interesting screenies!![]()
