I can tell you that it isn't luck. I had my 1 & 2 item favors at the start but since i started doing something differently i have 4-5 each favor consistently. Throw some rares in the mix and i get around 7 items per favor.
Translation: I have not actually done any of the above, but adding a disclaimer should avoid people asking about it.I really do not know what most people are doing but the favor system is not bad at all. I have gathered 45 favors since the update a week ago and here is my stats.
Time Invested: 11 hours 15 minutes. (675 Minutes)
Items Gathered: 208 Normal, 17 Rare
Money Made: 24,200,000 Gil
Means 1 Item every 3 minutes. Not really that bad.
I am not going to disclose what exactly I am doing but people should give it a bit more time before crying over everything new so quickly. There is a ton of money to be made here currently if you do it right.
4-5 of what? Certainly not main or off hand tools.
You could make a maximum of 10 refined materials from 200 resources, and that is assuming you only farmed the two items required for a single refined material.
Without using the exact math, I will say that making more then 2 tools is highly unlikely, unless you dont care what it is you make.
The same goes for the number of items.
Why make 4 accessories when a single tool has far more stats and does not require pentamelding tier IV's, and adding Tier V's?
I won't ask how you obtained enough for all 9 materials. However I will ask what equipment you are making that only requires one material. Only the rings require 1 material. You made 4 rings? Only the other accessories require 2. Everything else requires 3 or 4.
And frankly speaking the accessories don't qualify as proper pieces of equipment.
As for there being nothing locked by gates. The amount of materials you can make is locked behind a gate. The amount of materials you can farm is locked behind a gate. The amount of each type you can farm is locked behind a gate. You gain 9 tokens for favors each week, yet each material turn in requires you use 2 favors.
And ofcourse, the marketboard supply is locked behind all these same gates.
Buy them? Where do you find the materials? I don't see how unless you are on one of the largest servers. And even there the supply will be small, and the prices high.
Trade them? How many people actually grind the favors out? Only those looking to make gil, or crazy level crafters.

The Problem is if making money isn't your primary goal with collectIng the mats but to actually use them for crafting.
If you use them for crafting then you would have crafted 4-5 items with the materials i farmed this week. That really is not that bad of a progress. This update just made it harder to be Mr. Everything. You have to put your main focus on one area.
If you gather, why even craft the items yourself? Just farm the Gil and buy them if the equip is what you desire. There is multiple ways to get what you want.
And if you are a crafter, just buy the materials and craft items to make profit or use it for yourself.
I don't see the issue. In real life, if you want a toaster you buy it too with the money you make through other means more suitable to you. You don't go and mine iron ore, copper and oil to create the materials required.

A Toaster - to follow your example - doesn't cost 10+ Million as the crafting gear will propably cost.
Don't bring rl in here because there are man things you wouldn't do there.
We started out FFXIV being able to be everything we can depending on the time we invest or our regarding our own interests but we could.
My point? I don't wanna spend millions of my money for something a Shirt while ago I was able to Do myself.
Money doesn't give u the same feeling as if you'd have done it youself - at least that counts for me.
Be like me... simple as that.
Gather your items, use them to trade in for mats. Buy mats to trade more. Buy others people tokens to trade even more. Craft to make gil so you are able to buy other peoples token and tradein mats.
There is NOTHING locked behind gates. The only thing that is locked is your will to grind hard... these mats are not untradeable and there wont be any new gear out for a while. I like how it is currently because due to the cap there is something like a market. Maybe people will now think twice before undercutting stupidly...
Right now i made 4 pieces, got mats for another 5. I could already make mainhand offhand nad most likely chest and legs pieces of crafting gear i just have to figure out which class to make it for.
It is locked because you can't gather it all youself and or you DON'T wanna spend millions of gil for other people's mats.
Lol you'll start agreeing with op when rng slaps u in the face with 0 concealed nodes during 1 favor.
Then after the slap they'll push u down and kick u as the 2nd favor will give u 1 node that contains 1 common rare item. Then to rub salt in ur bruises ur gathering bud says oh? How many did u get so far? I have 11 ooids and 4 roundstones. Then u reply with a salty attitude and say i only got 2 ooids. Both ppl hit the same amount nodes & deplete em yet the sole difference is rng.
U pay red scrips to deal with rng, thats pretty dumb lol.
yeah, it's called cheating![]()
The key issue from my perspective is that 208 Normal Materials for a week's worth of Gathering Favours means that you effectively can provide materials for 1.155 crafters who have maxed their week's worth of Crafting Red Scrips, or leaving you with ~70 Red Scrips 'banked' on a weekly basis. This doesn't really make sense with how readily you'll come by counterfoils, or by the normal Gatherer:Crafter ratio works.
In theory, folk could burn the Rare Materials and three Crafting Red Scrip tokens to burn the disparity for HQ mats, but I don't think that's practical or even desirable over the long term -- you end up losing Red Crafter's Tokens on too much of the gear compared to the i180 prices.
And, frankly, 11 hours and 15 minutes is a huge amount of time investment weekly, especially when added to the three to six hours it takes to get the Red Gatherer Scrips to start with. That's two hours a day every day minimum, and well outside of the time cost for crafters.
