I miss the sense of adventure and danger in MMOs.

Back in EverQuest and FFXI, you could easily get turned around and lost. At least, I know I could. Then you had the fear of dying and losing exp (not that I want to be able to lose exp). But it brought about a great sense of adventure.

I feel like everything is just so easy to get to in MMOs these days. I miss having to fight my way through hordes to get where I wanted. Not just run through and ignore all damage I take.

I know this kind of topic pops up now and then, and about 95% of you will disagree. Oh well.

Because the video game industry has changed. MMORPGs have changed. Most importantly, the target demographic has changed. It will never change back.

The past is gone; learn to appreciate what you have now, instead of constantly pining for what you once had.

FFXI never had a dangerous world. You either learned quickly how the more dangerous mobs aggroed and just avoided them or you stocked up on Silent Oil and Invisible Dust, completely trivializing any threat besides the occasional True Sight creature. I didn't play EQ very much so I can't comment on that. This is also the kind of thing that starts out fun, but it quickly becomes a tedious chore if you have to pass through the "dangerous" areas a lot.

You obviously never played FFXI or got very far.

I would kill for Castle Zvahl or Sea/Sky or the other various maze/caverns you could get lost in or run into NM's.

    FFXIV has none of this.

I played it for 7 years and had multiple 75s. The world was never truly dangerous. Even places like Castle Zvhal, Ru'Aun, and Al'Taieu weren't really that dangerous. You learned how mobs aggroed and took the appropriate steps to avoid them or you made liberal use of sneak/invisible. The only hard part was trying to find a safe spot to reapply sneak/invis or the rare True Sight mob you had to avoid. Zones weren't dangerous, they were a tedious exercise in patience.

Gotta agree with the Sneak/Invis stuff. It was overdone, because people weren't really exploring in the way the devs designed it. FFXI was almost entirely party-based, and most areas couldn't be safely explored alone without the aid of Sneak/Invis, which could also get expensive. Most of the maps were flat out misleading, making it look like you could get to certain areas via certain paths, only for there to be a rock, tree trunk, or slightly raised piece of land that prohibited you from getting there.

And while I think you can make the case that XIV could use some more overworld party-based things, XI took it to an extreme.

    ???

Aren't you taking protective measures because the mobs were dangerous? Thus it indeed has a dangerous world? Going "FFXI didn't have a dangerous world because I had to prepare for dangerous mobs" doesn't make sense. Anyway, I liked having to pick and choose between quickly fighting down a monster or avoiding it... in case more patrol through and start attacking. Made journeys through dungeons/strongholds really fun and interesting.

Yes, and because of those protective measures the world is no longer dangerous, otherwise you wouldn't bother using them. It's only "dangerous" in the sense that if you decided to run up to a mob and smack it it'll probably wipe the floor with you, but the danger isn't very tangible if you can trivialize it with smart movement and item use. The mobs may be dangerous in the literal sense of the word, but they pose no real threat to you unless you go out of your way to make it so (or unless they posses True Sight, but those types are exceedingly rare).

No danger huh? Let's see you go in 2007 to solo a T - IT mob, without a RDM. Let's see how long you last, oh and get agro from another 1 or 2 monsters, without being RDM to sleep , nuke, sleep nuke. BUT FFXI had no danger..LOL.
