Usually if I see them doing the full rotation, actually using cooldowns on trash (ugh, those that "save them for the boss" aside from like Battle Litany and 2min+ CDs are painful) and if they squeeze DPS really well (DRGs and MNKs saving gap closers for adds they know will spawn so they keep DPS up, getting "incidental" AOE when possible with Geirskogul etc). As you can see I notice this more from DRG than anything, because I main DRG. I'm hoping that by leveling up and mastering my DRK and SCH I'll have a better appreciation of what they are capable of and what to look for in a "good" one.

If the tank pulls enough mobs i'll commend him.

Dpsing healer outright wins my commend.

A nin who uses goad on pulls will get it from me also. ( easy right? yh. but never happens....)

don't really pay attention enough ( or even care otherwise ) to the other classes that might earn one.

It's totally random, I think half the time when I don't get any it's just because people rush out since it seems tank or healer always get them. Some DPS are stupid though, like they just assume if they die it's automatically due to the healer and that you are a bad one or something. I used to always give them but now I really only do if someone actually stood out or made an impression. Tank and get us through super fast, it goes to you. Bard and you do requiem then it goes to you. Or everyone new except a DPS and they are explaining the bosses to everyone, I'll give it to them. If it's just a normal run though with nothing really stand out (as in everyone just did their role as expected) I don't always give it, or sometimes will to a random DPS since they get shafted most times in the commendation department. Other than that I don't have the time to be monitoring the party list to see what exactly someone else is doing all the time and like the other poster said I don't really care either to be honest. Sometimes I wish there was the opposite of commendation though, like the Aery last night where the one monk would only do auto attack and nothing more even when we'd tell him to do his combos.

People will give a comm if you really made an impression on them in one way or another. But they have to actually notice you did something. Sometimes your efforts aren't always as noticeable depending on the run and sometimes what class you're playing.

It's also surprising how people play, like my best friend plays on PS3 which is like 720p and I honestly have NO idea how he plays. Everything is SO big on his HUD (he won't resize anything) that the party list completely covers half of the enemy list. I can guarantee he isn't noticing what others do as he just doesn't pay attention to that.

Off-topic but still relevant to this thread: has there been any discussion previously about changing the commendation system so that each person in the group can vote on every other person, choosing whether to give them a commendation? Commendation reward requirements (I'm assuming they exist?) could be tripled since commendations received could be tripled in this scenario.

This would allow everyone to give one, two, or three people in the party a commendation. Those who don't give comms probably would continue not giving comms, but those who do observe who does what in a party could give comms to anyone they thought deserved them.

People would still complain about not receiving any comms or enough of them, but at least the option would be there to give them to anyone in the party, and it would avoid the decision about which one person to give them to.

Ehm... While it can be hard to decide who to give a comm to, I'm not sure I could support the idea of letting everyone comm everyone. Loses a lot of its value if you do that, IMO...

I wouldn't assume that everyone would be giving comms to everyone. Lousy players still likely wouldn't get any comms, yet this would allow those who did a good job to get them, even the DPSers who probably don't see them that often. Tripling (or quadrupling or more) the amount of comms needed to get rewards would keep people from getting them too quickly.

As for the people who don't take a second to give comms now, that probably wouldn't change.

I agree, I have no qualms about giving my commendation to the player who did the best. By that I mean the player that had the most impact on the group, a tank that pulls and mitigates appropriately, healer recovering from mistakes or providing solid DPS without endangering the party, or a DPS that's just killing it, spot on with LB's and such, or anyone who's bubbly and upbeat throughout the run. By giving everyone a commend, you don't get to single out who did the best. You just say that everyone did ok.
