Personally, when in a 4 person group, I'll choose a DPS (I generally heal.) I don't really expect comm but they're nice. I think I really only get annoyed in trials when the other healer (and this has happened more than once) literally sits down and does nothing while I heal and DPS at the same time, and find I get zero comm (the annoyance probably stems from the fact that the lazy healer probably got all my comms) but yeah. Not a big deal.

People can say that you just left too early or that they had happened to give it to someone else, or that they "forgot" sure they forgot to give a commendation
but they didn't have any trouble clicking on the loot list below it right?
Been in DF with my roommate normally as tank and healer, so either of us can dps well. We get paired up with a lot of poor players, they are either always silent, unresponsive or just dont try at all.
even when they queued up together so where did that commendation go? they never planned to give one out.
Even when we say thank you, they finally respond with np
Like really? you can't say hi, you can't answer if you want loot or a fast run but you can say np when someone says thank you as a courtesy.
We shouldn't always expect a commendation but the fact is there are people who just don't have room in their head for anyone doing good other than themselves.

I feel the very same way, i just hope they are going to the dps or the tank actually trying.

I don't think there's any one formula for it, it depends on the other players. Times when I thought I was atrocious, three comms. Times I felt I carried or did really well, no comms. I struggle myself knowing who to give a comm to after 8 player quests, because I'm so focused on my own role that it's hard to pay attention to who's doing particularly well. In most cases, I give it to the person who was the friendliest and most responsive.

Ability tends to be lower down on my list of reasons. I've been with tanks who were undoubtedly amazing but were very cold, didn't say anything, ignored questions, set off on speed runs/ took enormous pulls without even consulting anyone (the latter being huge pressure on me as a healer new to the dungeon) and made everyone feel a bit awkward, so I ended up giving the comm to DPS.

If no such situation pops up because everyone else isn't messing up either, bad luck, but you just didn't get a chance to shine, sorry.

If I die I always point the finger at myself, make a joke about it or something. Just try to have fun and get those around me into it, and it always goes well. To expect comms, well thats a whole different thing, never expect them no matter what you do.
My experiences match these two. Basically, the best way to get comms:
    1. Save parties from bad tanks or other "oh sh&&" situations (yes, this means being preventative can prevent you from getting comms too)
    2. When applicable, explain fights/mechanics.
    3. Be chatty
    4. Be somewhat animated with emotes

The latter two are actually (again, in my experience) far more effective than anything else. Basically, people like a person who acts like a person far more than they care about any performance metric.

It's mostly just a personal annoyance for me. Being a healer, I tend to observe a lot because I am hanging back. I tend to comm the tank just simply because I know how rough bad players impact they're morale, tanking time to time myself in 2.0.

I will comm any other player if they are helpful to newbies if I cross them in df.

For me, it bothers me becuase I have a lot of experience of getting comms more when I feel like being lazy and sticking purely to healing and none when I outperforming what an average player would expect. But I understand the criteria is different for everyone.

I know that feeling, sometimes I zone out of a dungeon and feel like, "Whaaat, no comms??," after doing some serious work, DPS'ing, dropping rezzes and all that. Then other times, the dog barges in during a boss, I panic and spam Cure or it's equivalent while trying to shepherd the dog away, not even able to look at the screen, and walk away with 2 or more commends. It just depends on who you're with. Some people appreciate the healing role despite its transparent nature (you don't necessarily notice a good healer right away, but you sure do with a bad one) and will throw you a comm regardless, others always hand it out to the tank, or their partner DPS, and still others have their own personal criteria for you to meet. Just roll with the punches, get back in there and keep doing great.

I get commendations allot on my Ninja, though mostly I think cause I'm friendly throughout the dungeon, I will occassionally chat or point out things that can be helpful, its not uncommon for me to get full commendations from the entire party in some cases, I got that allot with Avery when I would point out stuff with the bosses and other helpful timbits. I have a notepad handy that If someone is unfamiliar with a bosses mechanics I can easily copy and past it into the chat, its simplified and easy to follow, I put some effort into making sure I don't hit them with a wall of text. Sometimes its things like this that can easily influence a party.

This is how I choose who I give commendations too:

Overall: How often do I have to heal them? Are they dodging AoEs and dodge-able mechanics? Are they being helpful and constructive to new players or players that are having trouble? Are they social? Do they know the fight? If not, are they willing to listen when someone is explaining it to them?

First Timers: If it's there first time to the dungeon/trial and they did well, I usually give them the Commendation.

Tanks: Are they pulling adds and keeping aggro on all of them? Are they using their cooldowns correctly and at opportune times? Are they "squishy"? Do they wait on pulling the boss while we explain the fight mechanics to new players?

DPS: Are they at least doing their basic rotations correctly? Are they killing trash and adds quickly? Are they using utility when it can benefit the party?

Healers: Are they prioritizing healing? Are they adding DPS to the party?

I always give love to the healers. Thanks for getting it done, and keep up the good work!
