Considering the time and effort required, it's worth AT LEAST 100 million gil.
Another way to make crafting more useful is to allow it to craft "speciality" gear.
Gear that reduce damage from certain attacks from certain mobs or do more damage/apply status effects to certain mobs. Of course none of said mobs will be in raids. This way raiders won't feel pressured to buy them to min-max.
I think it's been mentioned that right now, the team is anxious to prevent people from clearing A savage in penta-melded, crafted gear. I don't t think that would be the case among all raiding FCs but the top tier ones would have the resourced to do that. One idea I liked from WoW was the self only crafts that in some cases, were as good as mid tier raiding gear. Those would needed to be gated behind specializations though.
Personally, I'd like crafting to be like DAoC's crafting system, where it's not possible to min max any one thing. There's caps on stats like vit and dex, but there's also combat bonuses like attack speed, crit chance, etc, which have caps. You have to make tradeoffs, and it's based on your play style. It helps that DAoC has greater character customization then FFXIV, but I think there's room for a sch who wants to cap crit chance for Adlo vs one that want's to cap spell speed for faster heals.
I don't get why Yoshida is so worried about the top tier raiding FCs. You can't stop them from beating stuff faster than the designer intends because they've trained themselves to german suplex content into submission in record time. Plus it doesn't make much sense to draw attention to the less savory end game grind that characterizes the genre, either. One of the reasons hunts work is that people can distract themselves with other things while they are doing them. MMORPGs at end game are glorified online chat rooms after all. Running expert roulette on a daily basis is absolute torture because it requires a player's full attention every time they do it and we're doing the same thing on repeat. Even Alexander becomes that way after a while.

Woot fellow DAOC player, I maxed all crafts on my Valewalker at 1100+, was not fun doing that it was a good system for customization that is for sure.
some interesting ideas for ways to adjust the system posted so far, let's hope SE is listening.
