    Thinking about starting a craft.

I main BLM, so I'd like something to complement this well. Though most of the stuff I equip is tome gear, being able to repair on my own might be convenient. On the other hand, GSM wouldn't be a bad choice either.

Is there anything I should consider cross-classing? Are leves worth it to do? I'm currently at 100/100.

Kind of a dangerous time to ask folks whether you should level a craft. People are pretty salty about the current state of endgame crafting. XD

As BLM, the crafts that best complement your job are Goldsmith and Weaver, with a dash of Leathercraft. Weaver makes almost all of your left-side gear (with Leathercraft making up the rest), and Goldsmith makes your accessories and weapon.

You'll want to level EVERY class to at least 15 for their cross-class skills. This isn't as daunting as it sounds, as leveling to 15 is super easy, especially if you use leves (which it sounds like you have no shortage of). The earlier you do this the better, since it will allow you to get practice using the cross-class skills. Leveling CUL to 37 is also strongly recommended, as Steady Hand II is boss, but if that sounds like too much of a grind you can do without it. It's nice having those 100% success rate Basic Touches, though, and the magic it works on Hasty Touch and Rapid Synthesis is priceless.

The ability to repair your own gear is awesome. No more "Sorry, guys, I gotta go, my weapon just broke." Just repair it on the fly, even in the middle of combat. Just remember to keep a stack of Dark Matter on-hand; I had one embarrassing incident where my weapon broke and I found out I was all out of Dark Matter. Thankfully I was with friends. As I was tanking, made for a pretty exciting run when I swapped out my Relic Weapon for a Blunt Bastard Sword I happened to have lying around in my inventory!

Get them all to 15 then focus on the one at a time. Best choices for blm are weaver, gsm, then alch, but as the previous post said, eventually you want them all to 50 for the better crossclass. There's also the advantage of self repairs, in which case crp and ltw also make the leveling list.

Thanks for all of the advice so far. One thing I noticed with quick synth is that it doesn't take cross class into account. I'm leveling up cooking for Hasty Touch and auto making hardboiled eggs for my GC. I still fail despite having Careful Synth crossed.

Careful isn't a trait, it's an action you have to use.

Quick Synth looks at your Craftsmanship and Level vs the item you are making and basically sets a failure rate and some HQ rate.
If you are QS'ing something near your level with dated gear your failure rate will be higher, regardless of class, x-class skills, w/e, only your Craftsmanship and relative level matter.
If you QS something some 15-20 lvls below you with HQ level appropriate gear, you should have a 100% success rate, and maybe a 5% HQ rate.

    Start with Weaver.

Quick synth your way to level 30, use leves to hit 50. Weaver for the Careful Synthesis II, which I believe is the most powerful skill for low level crafters.

Level everything else to 15, and Culinarian to 37.

    Never touch Culinarian again.

Use you newly acquired cross class skill set to make your life as a Weaver easier.

Make your self a couple million Gil.

Use said Gil to level all of your 15's to 30, and then leves to 50. Make millions off Velveteen in the process.

Once all are at 50, use leves to get to 60, working one at a time.

    Get rich.

There is no end-game crafting market at 60. It was abolished by design. Your only viable source of income at 60 is other crafters, and that will disappear when people have their AF and tools, because there is nothing to craft with them. There is an extremely narrow window of time left by which anyone will be "getting rich", and the only means they will be doing so is to make gear for other gatherers and crafters, while there is still a demand for that sort of thing. The current system has a very definite breaking point on the horizon.

Why would you post something like this in a thread where this person is looking to get in to crafting? How very selfish of you. You have zero evidence to support such claims.

Please keep your speculation and fear mongering posts limited to the "err meh gawd red scrips" threads. Not here.

In terms of crafting in general, if you level everything up together (except for food), you'll have the benefit of being able to make items from one class and using them in another, such as using carpentry to make lumber and then using that lumber to make weapons in blacksmithing. (I think culinary is in it's own little world) However I do realize you had asked specifically about crafting for a BLM.

It's much easier to make money from crafting, which you can then use to buy more materials, if you focus on all of the crafts at once and level them up in parallel. But that does take a lot of patience and time spent managing one's inventory. The benefits can make it very worthwhile depending on what you want out of crafting in the long run. Just something to think about.
