And having playing all of those MMO's with parsers, I feel that damage meters (non-personal ones) do much more harm than good in a community. Considering the climate in FFXIV, having an easily available damage meter woudl make it even worse.Sadly nearly every other MMO in existence would disagree with this statement (WoW being one such) as this is one of the few games on the market that doesn't actually allow them to be used.
The only reason it "might" cause an issue at this point would be due to the rather large awakening, and subsequent backlash it might cause amongst the players against such features, but that too would eventually pass.
In the end it would actually help more than anything if the majority of endgame is going to continue to be designed with strict DPS checks in mind, nothing bad can come from educating your playerbase.
